GoDaddy reserves names for you or something?

I thought this was strange...

I searched for a name, and was thinking of registering it. I went as far as putting it in my cart, but then decided against it and said I'd register it another time. So I canceled the name from my cart. I checked back a few days later and the name had been registered. I got mad at myself for not registering it, but today I was bored so I searched for the name on Godaddy again and it was available..

So what was up with that? Is that normal, does it always do that?

That's not reserved. You been jacked!

Nah, there's been talk of registrars spying on whois searches and if the name insn't regged by the 'searchee', the spying registrar will reg it and hold it for ransom.

Don't know how true it is as it has never happened to me. If I'm doing a search and I see a name I like, it get's regged immediately.

It has happened to me lots of time . When ever i search for new domain or do a whois search the web sites owner spies on search queries and they themself register high searched domain so they can sell you for higher prices. So be very carefull before u do whois search.

Anyway you can wait for 5 days to see if the registrar delete the name...
The loophole is limited for 5 days for registrars...

I've heard about that but its weird that its available again...

Unless someone regged it and dropped it, which wouldn't make much sense.

Its fine if someone dropped it but what if someone really thinks the domain has potential and goes on building it

I don't think registrars spy on searches (then again there is a possibility that some might do it) ...

think of the following points ...

- people make millions of searches per day ... eg. GoDaddy must be receiving a HUGE amount of searches each day either from regular searches for purchases or from people re-checking their to-buy lists through the very convinient 500-domains search

- people perform an enormous amount of silly searches (in a global scale) ... even with great tools to scan through the searches (eg. for keywords) it would need a person to check which ones to register ... this would need tons of time ... plus salaries

- have you ever tried to go through a 10 thousand expired domain list ... quite consuming huh ? ... now multiply that by 100 ... every day ...

- really small companies might do that kind of checking though ... but again that is not for certain ...

- domaining is global , people register about 5-20 .coms on average per second (400,000 - 1,500,000 per day) ... since so many people brainstorm and search for domains , another person could think of a nice name you just thought of a little while after you (and reg it)

- sometimes searches have glitches ... eg. when I was searching through Yahoo (in the past) a couple of times it showed as available a domain that was actually registered

Lastly , some people register domains ... check their traffic (and revenue) for a couple of days and if they don't like the outcome , cancel the registration before the 5-day grace period ends ...

Bob Parsons mentions the add/drop scheme in his last blog post , but I am not sure whether he is referring just to registrars doing it or to the individuals who reg/drop also ...

I'd recommend using Verisign's whois tool instead: http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois/

Don't type your domain in at a registrar unless you plan on regging it. Also, it is good to search for all extensions, not just the one you are thinking about regging (assuming someone is spying on your searches, they will have less of an idea which extension you are looking at possibly regging).
