Hi guys,

I was watching a programme on my Acer laptop and it suddenly switched off. Almost like a power cut. Now when I try and turn it back on, it turns on for between 3-10 seconds then the power goes again. Could this be a problem with the battery?

Any other ideas?

Many Thanks :tu:

It's possible the fan may be blocked and there is an overheating issue.
Check to see if the mother board capacitors are not bulged on the top this will mean that a new mother board is needed as there is a short occurring.

hi kev,

first of all let us know what the exact model is

second, gemstar could be right with the heating issue, but no need to disassemble...yet...:)

do you have a can of "canned air" around you? if not, blow very hard into the opening where your fan is located(that's why it would be nice to know the model for further instructions)

To answer your question about the battery, easy to test....just remove the battery and connect your charger to the laptop and turn it on....if the problem is gone you have the culprit....

let us know...

cheers

not necessarily, depends on the initial cost of the laptop and on the cost of the replacement board(and if you need an replacement, DON'T go to the manufacturers website and order one, in most cases you can find a cheaper one....and again, that model description would reeeaaallly help) :)

this usually happens when laptop becomes too hot and overheat. A shutdown mechanism that prevent damage on the motherboard. The best way to solve this problem and to prevent any further damages on your computer is to buy a USB powered laptop fan. You should get them right now since they are really affordable (After Christmas sale). Good Luck.

If your laptop still have its warranty then you must send it to them immediately to fix the problem.

Well I own a Compaq Laptop and also face this problem. So the good solution is to get a cheap Cooling pad and take your laptop to service in every 6 months.

This is what I do. I hope I helps.

Robin :)

Try re-seating the battery, just take it out and put it back in. You don't know how many times this fixes random problems.

I'm glad you have had success with Acer. After two years with the Aspire I had replaced the battery and the adapter. It was always over heating and always having malfunctioning drivers.

Switching over to a Toshiba Satellite has been better but still not anywhere near what I was expecting. I guess you get what you pay for.

All laptops I have had overheat way too quickly and easily.
