Well not if you're a current or former employee of Verisign :)

always use a good encryption software to protect your data...

or don't leave it in a car.
Would the computer be networked? so you couldn't get anything unless you log onto VeriSigns network?

Well, the first time the thieves connect to the net, the laptop will "phone home" to the manufactuer.
Since it has been reported stolen, the IP will be traced and the thieves brought to justice.

Yes there are ways around this, but the common, street level, scum, rip-offs are not generally aware of this.

I know how it feel, I had my laptop stolen few years ago, it was a nice latitude c610.
I called dell, and had them put my laptop serial # in stolen laptop list, but never heard anything back....

Hopefully that laptop has lojack installed. I think that's what it's called. Not quite sure what it does but helps with theft

Yeah, either the thieves or an innocent person who purchased the laptop off a couple of people on the corner.

Where do these people park that they get the laptop stolen this easily? I wouldn't leave my own laptop in the car let alone an employer's. Why was there employee information on the computer? That shouldv'e never even been on it.

Irresponsibility, personal and corporate

According to VeriSign, the car was parked in the employee's garage. According to the Sunnyvale CA (where the theft occurred) police, the garage was unlocked. According to both, the area had recently had a rash of burglaries.

Obviously this was someone who shouldn't be trusted with confidential access to anything. VeriSign says that she is no longer with the company, but that is small solace to those who have had their personal data compromised.

Apparently, the confidential data was not even encrypted.

VeriSign's letter mumbles reassuringly that the laptop was shut down and access would require a Windows logon and password. That is hysterical considering how easy it is to pull the disk drive and access it from another computer. Pure spin control.

VeriSign is aware of at least one well documented case of identity theft and fraud following this event, but will not say whether they have reported data theft to law enforcement authorities (as opposed to the physical theft of the laptop, which is known to the Sunnyvale Police). They've offered a year of free credit monitoring to those in danger, but no cooperation to anyone actually victimized.

There are none so blind and so dumb as those who desperately want to protect their public image.
