So I had emailed the gen info line to say how nice their site was. I got this reply:

Hello Tim,

Thank you very much for your comments about our new mobile website. We really believe this is the way people will travel in the very near future.

I have attached the press release and photo that we used to launch the project.

Best regards,
Chris

New for Summer 2007!
North America's first mobile-specific touring website

Here is the press release. The photo is attached. Can someone teach me how to make it appear in the post?

For immediate release:

Smart Travel Debuts in Canada
Kootenay Rockies Launches the World’s Most Extensive
Mobile Tourism Website

Kimberley, April 25, 2007 – Kootenay Rockies Tourism has become the first Canadian Destination Marketing Organization to offer full online travel information services to mobile users.

KootenayRockies.mobi is now live using Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) to provide travellers hundreds of pages of accommodation options, attractions, events and even restaurant menus. Pretty much everything you need to know about travel in the Kootenay Rockies is now available on your mobile phone or other handheld device.

“This is the ultimate tool for flexible travel,” says Chris Dadson, President of Kootenay Rockies Tourism. “Mobile websites will revolutionize the way travellers experience a destination; they will research, plan and book on-the-fly with nothing more than a web-enabled cell phone.”

Simple navigation and page presentation provides users with destination and travel information that loads quickly and inexpensively. They can request additional text, images or even sound bites to help in their search for information about the Kootenay Rockies.

“Users of KootenayRockies.mobi will be amazed at the amount of content we have in mobile-specific format,” says Karen Cook, Project Manager. “And we will continually be adding new features such as enhanced maps, GPS capabilities, even things like booking last minute rooms or tee times. The sky is the limit for this kind of technology.”

The personal computer is still the most popular way to access information in Canada, however internet access via mobile phone is starting to outpace the personal computer in countries such as the UK, Japan and Korea. These are key markets for the Kootenay Rockies and it’s only a matter of time before more North Americans start seeking out information on their cell phones as much, or more, than their computers.

“We are proud to be able to offer our flexible travellers this cutting edge information channel. It will surely enhance their experience as never before,” says Chris Dadson.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
This ought to be funny. I remember this coming up a while back and someone saying the name was too long. Like that changes anything? They should change the name of the park to something shorter?

Sorry, had to bring that up and say it before someone else did. Like The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Sure would take less space on the signage on the highway to just put

I'm more excited about the CEO's vision statement than the beautiful site.

Tim, I agree. It is great to see someone (besides myself...meaning I keep bringing up the same thing time after time) talk about and know their market and then markets their product to that segment. In other words, this is a person who knows of and is aware of and following trends on a global level, not just on the local economy scale.

I have also seen a bigger trend and even greater promotion for international cell phone rentals. This is good and will help promote .mobi. Perhaps we will see more and more sites (like museums etc) going to a .mobi style directions and site seeing information.

This, in time, will probably give way to global acceptance and cooperation among all telecommunication providers to cross those sacred lines and use each others facilities and towers and waves to carry signals. It is only in their best interest and indeed in .mobi's interest to do this. When I go to Vienna or Florence, I take my phone, it works, and no roaming charges. Flat fees, flat rates, all service provided...this would be a major blow to traditional internet providers.

There is a huge and growing trend with the younger generation (I can't believe I just said that) to not even have a landline in the their living quarters. Sorry I can not recall the exact numbers, but I think it was something like 25% of the 30 and younger crowd use solely cellular service and have no home phones. This should be a clear indicator to future trends and markets.

Anyways, this is a good read and enlightening to see that this DOES NOT have to be a Fortune 100, 500, or 1000 company to be successful. Those companies did not get where they are following anyone's lead. This person certainly isn't waiting on anyone else to do his marketing strategy for him.
