Afternic appraised artes.mobi for $2000. Usually I see "professional" appraisals that are obviously too high, so I was surprised when I received this low appraisal. On a scale of 1-10, they gave the .mobi extension a score of 4, which I'm sure is what brought it down, considering the SE Term Popularity got a score of 9.

I wonder if Sedo would have appraised a .mobi higher, since that seems to be the place where .mobi's sell.

Oh well, it was a free appraisal, can't complain.

How do you get a free appraisal on afternic? Do you have to list your domain name there for sale? Thanks in advance

afternic appraisal staff is very bad in appraising domains.... they use a software to determin the value...

i would never pay them again... they have no clue!!! now owned by buydomains.... there going to want to value your domain very low...

i emailed buydomains 50 domains to sell, and they came back with offers of xx to low xxx.

meanwhile another broker company was willing to pay mid xxx to mid xxxx. for the same domains.... buydomains and afternic are now one....thats not a good sign!!!!!!!!!1

I recently had pay.mobi appraised by Afternic. They gave a price range of 150K to 875K which I think is realistic for this domain.
Sedo only came to 9K for the same domain.

I'd also be interested in finding out about how you get their free appraisals. Is is a human appraisal or just run through a software?

Yep..

See the smiley...

Incredible name ! If you see the mtld premium names list and what crappy names are on it...it's unbelievable this one was free...

Or you must find for example: angermanagement.mobi a better name... :)

Afternic Appraisals

All:

I thought I would jump in here and respond.

100% of appraisals sent out by Afternic are reviewed by a human being. They are measured across a combination of of objective and subjective criteria - all are explained within each appraisal.

Additionally, each domain appraised is given both a monetary value and a Domain Name Index (DNI) score, which is a total score on a range of 1 - 100.

Lastly, with respect to valuation methodology, domains are valued on a retail (versus wholesale) basis. Meaning the appraisal value is Afternic's estimate on value of a particular domain in the retail marketplace - which is different from what the seller might expect to receive if selling to a wholesale buyer.

Hope this help, feel free to call me any time on 781 839 2812 - I am happy to discuss in further detail if needed.

Best Regards,

Pete Lamson

I think it is also important to consider that some types of appraisals rely heavily on comps. That is, comparable sales data. With real estate, it can be pretty darn easy to find a very comparable property if the house being appraised is in a neighborhood....sometimes the appraiser can find 2 or 3 or 4 houses that are almost identical and have changed hands in the last year or two. I used to appraise vintage cars, and that was similar....because you could usually find some comparable sales results. That is, if I was appraising a 1967 Jaguar E type roadster, I could usually find some very similar cars that had sold....and I would factor in other details to arrive at a final appraisal value...condition, options etc. But with a domain name, there is no identical name out there that has sold. There are similar names, but the nature of domains is that there is not another one that is identical, right? Even if you find a name that is similar, it is still very arbitrary as to 'how similar'.
As we used to say in the car business, the book value or an appraisal should only be intended as a guide. The appraiser is not offering to buy your item, he is just giving you his best, educated, opinion.
