I have just registered a .jp domain name with
http://www.jp-domains.com/index.php
The average charge from other registration sites for .jp appears to be in the range $99-$150. An expensive taste I think you will agree.

expensive for you maybe, but people in japan has high living costs so maybe it doesn't matter too much for them.

I know that most registered .jp are company names, organisations, schools. Very little do you see personal sites as compared to .com, .net.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion 1rrr1, however, I donโ€™t know of any facts that support that reason you give. Here is a quick cost of living graph, not perfect as it is general Cost of Living (not JUST food or health care) from http://www.factbook.net/Cost_of_living.php

Your argument that it relates to cost of living would mean that a United Kingdom CCs (eg. .co.uk) should be five times more expensive than a Tuvalu CC, as the cost of living is more than five times as much? However, the registration cost is the reverse!

I speculate that there are several forces effecting registration fees, however, cost of living is not play a significant factor: The most significant factor is the number of middle men. With those increased middle men layers, the role of competition is all but negated.

Good luck.

I've never had a referral from a .jp site that I'm aware of. I get some google.co.jp results,I really figured that it was the same in .jp as it was in .uk.

noo I don't work for jp-domains.com. There appear to be only a limited number of .jp domain sellers as they have to be in a position to offer a proxy Japanese address to international buyers who are not resident. jp-domains.com are the cheapest one I can find that's all. For those wanting to build web sites related to Japanese culture or business .jp may have more status than .com as a ccTLD.

what name did you register? I'm curious to know if it is an English word/name or Japanese word/name.

It is an English word/name eg JapaneseArt, but I am also thinking about an English word/Japanese name eg Kimono.

A lot of country TLDs still have a lot of restrictions on them
I saw a site that lets you register a one character country TLD, my payment got through and everything was alright, but then 1 week later they refunded and said it's not allowed :(

There are no restrictions on international ownership of a .jp domain name and the domain can be hosted anywhere. However if you are not resident in Japan then you are confined to using the few registration providers who can provide a Japanese address for you. From a cultural point of view geisha.jp would carry equal/more cachet than geisha.com. Similarly, berlinwall.de is in my mind a nicer extension than berlinwall.com. The same goes for tajmahal.in. The .com has maybe better short-term value but some ccTLDs have very interesting potential.
