Hello All,

Yes, we all know that .com is "King" - although other extentions are becoming more popular (obviously in the majority of cases, it's because the .com of a particular name has been taken).
However, I believe that the .tv extention is becoming more popular (regardless of reg. price) simply because the medim of television is always changing with improving technology - and being infinite, there will be more and more .tv extentions being regd., now that good, practical .coms still available are becoming as rare as hen's teeth.

The one major extention I dont hear much about here on site is .jp
And why not?
This is a country with a population of app. 128 million with arguably the most advanced technology in the world.I dont have any figures regarding their exports, but who is not aware of their giant corporations?

There seems to be no "residency restrictions" when registering a .jp - as there are with a .us registration. And the cost of registering is not
terribly high.
I wonder why nobody has championed the .jp cause, in the domain name business.
I have one .jp extention name (although I also have the .com) and was wondering how many fellow namepros have any.
I would like to hear your views - and if anyone has sold a .jp - especially to an end user.

Thankyou to any replies.

charbar.

As I know, Japanese people and companies seem not to care much about what domains they use, nor what domains they visit. So you may see may very popular websites using very long and hard to remember domain names.

.JP has a small aftermarket because of the prohibitive registration fee and registration restriction. You can get around the reg' restriction with certain registrars as they'll use their Japanese contact information as a proxy, but still the cost of .JP names scares a lot of folks.

.IN has been a great success because a) reasonable cost of reg' and b) no residence restrictions. Clearly the folks who run .JP are not interested in creating a market for .JP names, otherwise they would drastically lower the reg' fee and remove the restrictions.

I've dropped most of my .JP names as they were hurting me too much with the reg' fee, but I am still optimistic; I'm still holding some premium names, like:

BUYING.JP
CELLULAR.JP
DEBT.JP
DEBTS.JP
FEET.JP
RATES.JP
RELIGION.JP

As always, IMO.

Firstly, I cant see that the residency restrictions - or the price would deter a professional domainer.
At JP-Domains.com (no residency restrictions) The cost of registering a single name is $75. More than name costs $60 per year.
Secondly, I cant agree that registrars are not interested in creating an aftermarket.
That's only IMO.
I can see why you're retaining your .jp names - you've got a couple of crackers there. Good luck with them.
Anyone else got any views - or ideas how to kickstart the .jp ext. lol

Professional domainers don't like paying $29 so if you do not think $75 restrictive then you do not know many professional domainers. .pl has had more significant aftermarket sales than .jp so has .se much smaller countries. Very little interest in .jp Including from the Japanese themselves.

I will say I understand your question I have asked it before why does Japan not do well? I would have thought they would be just like .de but they are not.

The 3 names I have are related to Japanese culture and purchased with a view to possible future development. I am not sure whether there is much of a market for generic names such as those listed above.

These domains I believe will be worth quite a bit its's just that American's who are a big chunk of domainers at this point are just speculative, because of the intial investment IMO.

To register a name and do absolutely nothing with it--i.e. type in the name and you get a blank white space--is a crime against domaining! Too many premium .JP names are doing the white space thing, and it's got to stop. Check out:

internet.jp
sex.jp
creditcards.jp
movies.jp
money.jp

All of the above are registered yet deliver a blank white space to visitors. Disney owns movies.jp: Shame on them!

The least these owners should do is park the domain names somewhere, so that the typical Internet user doesn't get a blank white space when they type in the name. Show them some related links or something. Something!

As always, IMO.
