Jhoomla and SEO

Hi,
Is jhoomla good or bad for seo? Have a site built in jhoomla that I've asked to SEO for, is it going to have a negative impact for the rankings?

There are no platforms that are good or bad for SEO.


The power lies in the hands of the controller. Everything has its pros and cons. You have to learn how to make things work with what you have.

Platforms do not have a direct impact on SEO. You just need to have a clean theme: a site where there is no browser compatibility errors and where there is no coding error.

SEs do not care about the platform that site use at the back end: only a clean site is needed.

While I agree with the other posters to a good extent, I must tell you that content management systems do have their impact on Search engines...Some are easy to configure, manage and optimize while others get your sizeable time. In this context, I find Joomla disappointing so far as SEO is concerned.

I haven't worked with Joomla much but I believe that the application you use to create your site generally only has a small impact SEO wise. Mose SEO results are produced offpage through link building. Of course make sure you take care of the basics such as titles, headers and most importantly good relevant, unique content. Then I would focus on building quality backlinks and promoting the site.

When I say joomla disappoints as a SEO friendly CMS, here's what I mean..

I have tested a number of CMSes including but not limited to Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, Modx and lot many. Joomla is the least SEF amongst all of them out of the box. Now you need extensions JoomSEO or 404SEF or whatever they are, way too many to remember. Sometimes you will have to do template hacking or patching up....then extensions have their own bugs and issues. I noticed once on one of my sites, titles would automatically change to site name and sometimes they will get back to the custom titles I'd specifically written for SEO. It prooved too time consuming to keep switching between different SEF components and correcting URL structures...eventually I ended up moving to a different CMS and I am glad it happened.

Hosting a Problem

I could think of that..yeah...thought it was hosting initially....especially when they do things to speed up php execution..php with fastcgi and things like that...thought if Gzip compression mode was posing problems...tinkered with settings disabling gzip fastcgi etc...it wasn't doing good..not blaming joomla..it was just not for me perhaps...

Joomla is a good platform. SEO is another task that you'll need to implement to your site, no matter which platform you are using.
