I'm thinking of submitting one of my sites to the Yahoo directory, but the $299 a year fee is a bit steep. What has been your experience with them recently?

I remember submitting a site to Yahoo some 14 or 15 years ago. It wasn't even a very good site. The submission was free and it took them less than a week to list it. I got so much traffic to the site that my hosting provider promptly shut it down...unfortunately, I didn't even have a custom domain for the site at the time and the hosting provider refused my repeated appeals to reopen it.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Probably it worth it when you have more budget for website promotion. It doesn't worth if you are trying to promote your site with $500 in your pocket.

If the target audience of your web source in the majority visits Yahoo - it is surely worth it:)

maybe maybe not?

I have also paid for inclusion in yahoo directory about 1 year back but did not get so much benefit.. the fact is that if you are doing this for link building and you are tight on your budget then don't do this... for that budget you could get more good quality high PR links... and that will be much more beneficial for you SEO efforts!

It can be worth it. Do a search in Yahoo for all your top keywords. Are any of the listings on the first page directory listiings? If so, than it is well worth it. I have many clients that are on page one, and it is their Yahoo Directory listing that it there.

Example:
scrubs - Yahoo! Search Results ... =&ei=UTF-8

Six out the first 10 listings are Yahoo Directory listings. Tells you something...

I think it really depends on your business and your budget too.

paying to the yahoo is the best way, if you compare with the other way. See yahoo is the best search engines and it is viewed by millions of user per day. so I think it doesn't matter how much you are paying to the Yahoo directory. It will work.

I heard that they are closing new additions. Is it true?

There is this pretty crappy site which is my competitor, that ranks very well in Google, and I know they submitted to Yahoo Directory and other top directories as well, and I think that must be it...their inclusion in some top directories.

I wonder if Yahoo Directory forgets to take down any sites that are more than one year and never renewed their payment? Can anyone tell me?

Yahoo txt

Hi
I am new to this forum but had to post hear.
I paid once back in 2000 to see if spending money to get included in Yahoo was worth it. IMHO pay yourself to do good SEO on your site. Once you get picked up by Google then AOL, Yahoo, Jeeves, MSN/Bing Ect will pick you up and place you to their specs. Be sure to add a Yahoo txt file to help with ranking and inclusion. Hope this helps.

If your site is making money and you want to get more traffic, it may be worth it, but make sure you understand what will make a good listing in the Yahoo directory. If you have a poor listing it will not help much in my opinion. Get a listing at DMOZ.org and other places first, get your site making some money before you risk $300 on something that may or may not work well for you.

And consider that $300 could buy you a MASSIVE amount of directory submissions AND some link building work as well. It is also my opinion that $100 spent with a good directory submission service will provide more actual benefit to your site than one Yahoo listing. But you will still need to have good listings submitted to get the full value.

I wouldn't recommend doing this until you have done some free SEO marketing for your website. This way you can take a little bit of the profits you make and not have to shell out the whole $299 out of your pocket.

I myself have got around 8 sites in yahoo. I would recommend you doing the submission as it does help as far as the seo perspective is concerned. And it would help in yahoo search engine too.

It's really not worth the money. It really doesn't do much as far as SEO or increase traffic, so why waste $299?

I am definitely considering it, I have looked up what back-links some of the sites that I am competing with have, and the yahoo directory submission is the first one listed.
