I received interest in a domain name with website on Saturday.

The site is listed for sale at Sedo for $10,000.

I did some research into the guy who made the offer and he is a very rich businessman who has made other recent purchases in the $x,xxx range.

We wrote back to him today and received this reply...

10,000 USD. Ok.

Do you sell a web site or just the name? We are mostly interested in domain
names.

Do you have an appraisal certificate?

Domain name is an investment for me. In other words I'm going to sell your
name later and make a profit. If I overpay I won't be able to make a profit
in the future. It's very important for you and me to know the current market
value of your domain.

Of course, we must be sure that you are engaging a reputable appraisal
company. I heard many appraisal companies often made inaccurate appraisals.
I will only accept appraisals from independent sources I know and trust.

To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal companies in a forum.

Juck check this posting.

If the appraisal comes higher you can adjust your asking price accordingly.
I also hope you can give me 10% - 15% discount of the appraised value.

After I get an appraisal from you we'll continue our negotiations.

How do you prefer to get paid: www.escrow.com, www.PayPal.com check or
wire?

I then received this second reply.

I need a proof that our price is fair. I hope you understand the
importance of this question.

Usually, people who are selling names or web sites, provide buyers with
appraisals. This is a common practice and I'm not going to change this rule
because it's the best way to protect an investment.

I heard many appraisal companies often made inaccurate appraisals. So I
cannot accept appraisal from each and every site. I will only accept
appraisals from independent appraisal companies I know and trust.

Reading responses from experienced sellers I was impressed by one reply:
"Many Internet users are not smart enough and popular domain brokers are
using this fact to make money. They offer them cheap appraisal services. But
if their customers would have something in their heads they'd understand
experts could not make a professional research for $15-$20. These appraisals
are made by machines. Easy money for such appraisers as
http://www.Afternic.com and several other major brokers that offer cheap
auto-generated appraisals. In my eyes, all services under $60-$65 are not
manual and the results are generated by special scripts. I don't trust
auto-generated appraisals."

The same is true for GoDaddy and SEDO. Their services are not manual. They
are just collecting money using their well-known names.

Thank you for understanding. I'm looking forward to do business with you.

Hope we can come to an agreement fast.

Looking forward to your reply.

I'm sure many of you are sharing my thoughts that this is the lead up to an appraisal scam, however the guy does seem too have concluded some other genuine sales recently.

How should I proceed with this negotition? (Obviously with caution).

What, if any, reputable independent appraisal companies are out there?

Should I insist that he pays for the appraisal?

Thanx.

When I read this familiar sentence, I know it is a spam. 95% correct.
But it doesn't bother to reply and see though.

Scam.
Same verbage; same style, and I bet the name ends with a "PhD" , yes?
Do what you want with the "negotiations", but don't spend a dime on any appraisals or other "verification" services.

You got it.

Takashi Nakagami, Ph. D.
President
Opera Systems Ltd.

[email protected]

operaen.com redirects to http://webhuset.no/parkering

The incredible thing is that Takashi Nakagami, Ph. D. appears to be a real person, he was on C.N.N. Espanol the other night. I guess the scammers just get more and more sophisticated.

Should I contact webhuset.no and inform them there email services are being used for fraudulant activity?

Sure. Not that anyone can do much to stop scammers who have too much free time, but you never know what "tip" might finally shut some of these low-lifes up.

Hey Dominic - Unfortunately it does sounds remarkably similar to other known scams as pointed out by everyone else above - the wording sounds too much like the others - I guess this is his updated incognito attempt to continue his scamming - WAN*ER :td:

MEMORIZE THESE WORDS PEOPLE SO YOU KNOW IT'S A SCAM:

Do you sell a web site or just the name? We are mostly interested in domain
names.

Do you have an appraisal certificate?

Domain name is an investment for me. In other words I'm going to sell your
name later and make a profit. If I overpay I won't be able to make a profit
in the future. It's very important for you and me to know the current market
value of your domain.

Exactly the same as the scam letter I received two months ago. Luckily I was suspicious (like you) and didn't fall for it.

I got the same message today - word for word. What happened with this guy? Very curious.

I actually contacted the legal department at Opera.com about this, because the domain is strikingly similiar and the guy claimed to be the owner of "Opera Software" when I got my scam mail. They said they were aware of the problem and were taking care of it and thanked me for the tip. Apparently they haven't done anything yet :)

Still very much around - just adapting and changing tactics as need be.

It's still a dangerous world for us; many people willing to illicitly/immorally/illegally part me and my money ;)

Yep. Anything from @operaen is an appraisal scam. I've gotten several emails from an @operaen address using various names (including one from "Mr. Takashi"). Stay far away.
