The domain maybe is not useful anymore, trademark issue, owner's death, the owner has not the money to keep it, the owner may find just a better domain and doesn't need it anymore, rebranding, its extension has been very expensive in the long run etc.Found an expired domain. 17 years old.

But why would someone let go after this many years and then not re-register again?

Don't forget that ''A domain is expired and available for a reason''.
Not always but for the most of times. You should investigate it and take your decision.

Yeah those 3 drops is an indicator that it is not worth.Agree with what's already been said here. One thing I'd like to add is that pricing may have been wrong (too high) by all previous owners. All variables have to be good to make a sale.
