Ok heres the situation firstly I dont know anything about selling websites and yesterday I made the deal to sell my site and we got it uploaded to his servers and now the final step is to change the name servers to his well the probelm is the company that I'm hosted with and they designed my site registered the domain and I was talking to them yesterday about this and they changed over the info name and stuff like that and asked me for his name servers and I told em that was yesterday and I have'nt heard back from them and I've sent them a couple more messages with no reply and the guy thats buying my site is getting pissed off that this isnt getting done quick enough threating to canel the sale if its not done at a certain time.

And our deal was the money would be sent when the servers got changed over maybe I should have demanded the money first but is this a big deal about the name servers to flip out like this guy is doing

Sorry to hear this happened :td: , and sorry replying to it a bit late. Maybe, if you get them to change it fast, now, you can try to cut another deal (offer him a bit off, if you didn't try selling it too cheap to begin with, for his hassle/trouble waiting). A few tips for the future:

- NEVER register domain names with anyone that is not an ICANN Accedited Registrar (lists). I only would use two that are not, one I won't mention (respect to NamePros) and NamePros itself. NamePros resells through Enom, which is ICANN accredited, and NamePros admin (-RJ-) is alwasy willing to help those who have trouble changing or figuring out their registration interface here at the domain-registration section.
- NEVER register them with the same company that provides your hosting. There are many ICANN accredited registers this is safe to do this with, but why take the chance if you don't know much about the company. Follow the old maxim, "Never leave all your eggs in one basket.".
- IF a register doesn't give you complete control to change any and all details of a domain, at will and by yourself, run from them fast!
- Want opinions from fellow domainers on some of these companies? Visit the NamePros' Domain Regisrar Review area of the forum.

Hope these tips, just made :imho:-, help prevent this for you in the future. Best of luck sorting it out :)

Thanks for your reply I actually heard back from my host and he said he actually changed the name servers last night right after I sent him the info and it take 48-72 hours to propagate over to his servers is this normal.

I emailed the guy back and said what happened but have'nt heard back from him so I dont know.

About the other stuff I had a deal to get the website done half cheap if I got hosting with them too during the process they asked if I wanted them to get the domain for me so I said sure I figured this was normal process and would be easier but I didnt know any better at the time I guess learn from your mistakes eh.

With many registers, depending on where in the world the user is viewing the site from (or, the webmaster is trying to get into hosting control panel or FTP), and where the new servers are, it can take up to 72 hours for the domain to correctly point to the server. But, as soon as he made the changes (for most registers, some take a few hours), a whois search for the domain should show the new "dns servers" or "domain name servers" pointing to the correct host-names. This will show, rather you can login to the FTP/control panel or see the site on the new server or not yet.

Good luck. Hopefully he will get back with you and not only understand, but still be willing to make a deal.

Yes, mistakes should always be used as a learning tool. All of us made what we now call "stupid" mistakes in our webmastering and domaining, before we were told better or learned the hard way. The reason to keep your host having nothing to due with your domain registration is quite simple. If you don't like the hosting, you have the control to take the domain to any other host you wish, without them being able to stop you ;)

You may want to consider transfering the domain out of the host. If you wait to it is about to expire then you risk having the host create problems and delay it.

did you change the ownership (not the server) of the name without getting the money first?
