you have bought the name. For example, at dynadot, they offer 2.99 for privacy protection when you purchase. Isn't there an easy way to protect the whois for free yourself?

AFAIK, not for free.

if you have a lot of names and you want privacy, it could be worth registering an LLC (i think you can a wyoming one for about $150).

note that if you provide fake whois info, *technically* you could lose the name
""willful provision of inaccurate or unreliable information" shall constitute a material beach of the registration agreement."

Hmmm. I don't know of any free whois privacy services, but I know namecheap and a few other registrars offer a free whois guard with every domain registration.

Recently I rented a post office box to use for my whois contact info.

Post office box cost = $36/year

Using the post office box as whois address will save me several $100s by not using whois privacy from registrar.

Will someone more knowledgeable please answer if this is legit:

First Name: Domain
Last Name: Manager
Organization: <DomainName>.<tld>

or must "Organization" be a registered business entity?

GREAT IDEA for the ADDRESS part of the whois info.

I use a UPS mail drop and DNS Hostmaster (instead of my name) on most domains in my portfolio.

The important thing is to show that the registrant is either a living, breathing
human being (if personal) or a legally-existing entity (if org), especially if your
registrar contacts you for confirmation.

For the WHOIS phone number, you can use a free voicemail service.

This one is really good. You can get a free US number (you don't have to be in the US to sign up but you can only choose from their US numbers in any case) in the area of your choice. Messages left are sent to your email attached as a sound file. You can also listen to your messages in the account area on their website.

Post Office box is a great idea, however in Canada, if anyone knows where you can get a post office box for less than $115 a year...let me know. UPS's prices are ridiculous at $170 a year.

Please let me know if there is some company that I haven't thought to call. Mail boxes etc...is expensive, Canada Post is cheapest, but still way more than the $36 a year some people are talking about....I presume these cheap mail boxes are companies in the States.

So if you know of any cheap Canadian services for mail boxes, post their names,

Yeah, I have a mail box & one of those free phone number (message website).
I think I pay about $140.00/yr for mail box.
:(
I can get P.O. box for much less, but I don't want people to know I have a P.O. box.
I want a regular street address... make it look more professional.

Outrageous prices! thanks for the info....I've checked everywhere, not a big business or at least very little competition.

I don't really get why privacy is used anyway. Sure if a certain name is controversial and you want it private. Alot of newbies think they need privacy though for all their names, then they ask why are not my names selling? I ask them if they have privacy?. The answer, yes.

Most of my names that have sold have come in not thru an auction house, but by contacting me mostly by phone. Thats the main reason why I have no privacy for my domain who is.
