ccTLD Is there a pre-release for .ca's?

I always thought that .ca's go straight to pending delete if the owner does not re-new within the redemption period. But I keep seeing this "Ed Hew" snatching up .ca's during redemption period when the domain belonged to another owner. Can someone chime in?

well the thing is... i've been watching some .ca domains that are nearing expiry (and even after it expired), and then i check on it from time to time. Take this for example:

Domain status: registered
Creation date: 2006/01/05
Expiry date: 2012/01/05
Updated date: 2011/02/02

Registrar:
Name: CA Registry (Ed Hew)
Number: 71

Name servers:
ns1.dsredirection.com
ns2.dsredirection.com

I saw it expired in january...so i was watching it, and hoping to put a backorder on it when its on the TBR list, then all of a sudden 1 month later this "Ed Hew" guy grabs it before it even gets dropped? Am i missing something here?

CA Registry (Ed Hew) is the name of the registrar, the owner is a client of that registrar.

The updated date Feb 2nd 2011, was a wednesday so most likely it got picked up in TBR, if you PM me the name I can give you more info possibly

That wasn't dropped.

The domain goes into 30 day redemption or something before hitting TBR.

Plus, TBR would reset the creation date.

Thanks. Baxter helped explain how the process worked, and it's possible that it was transferred to another registrar while in redemption. That was the part that i was confused about because i watched the domain before and after it expired. It was in redemption period and then 1 month later it was suddenly with a new registrar and never got dropped. So i thought there was some pre-release that i was not aware of.

I was not aware that you could transfer out during redemption. Can anyone confirm this?
