IMO buying a brand new domain is best choice but if I don't get a desired name, I would think of purchasing a used domain.

Paying a lot for a used domain depends on a lot of factors like traffic, brandable name and one which can be associated with the new site. It is also recommended to find out who used it before, and how. If the domain still has a web site associated with it, one should check out the whois information.

As they said it depends on many factors: price, brandable, traffic,… and how badly you you want the domain. If I want the domain to develop a project I usually buy the name. I don’t have time to develop many projects (I wish I have more time) so I prefer them to stand on a good domain.

I think it all depends on why you want that domain in the first place. Personaly, if I could afford it, I would probably not hesitate to spend several thousand dollars on a domain that has traffic, if only as an investment in my permanent income over a longer period of time. The way I see it, simply having money sitting in your account and not making more money is a waste, hence why investing into a traffic domain that would earn reasonable parking revenues might be worth it.

However, if you intend to use this domain for a personal project, then you might be better off registering a name of your own. So long as you haven't publicised your project yet, you are free to change its name to suit the name of the domain that you are registering. Besides, since you will probably be promoting your project in the long run, existing traffic should not be a major consideration, I think.

Sincerely,
George

It depends on the name. If it's really a name that I want and I wouldn't be able to get my site up if the domain was not that one, then I'd buy it. If not, then I'll just think of an available one. Of course an existing one would have the benefit of existing traffic, but a new one would be more refreshing.
