I've read a number of articles which advise on the process of registering and selling a domain/website. Basically the process goes:-

1. Pick a niche/keyword/key phrase
2. Look it up on Google Keywords to see what the monthly searches and CPC are.
3. Register the domain(s)
4. Create a mini site
5. Wait for traffic to build up
6. Sell for $100 +

Here is one such article:-
http://www.domainsuperstar.com/watch-me-hand-register-com-domains-worth-more-than-100-dollars

It all seems a bit to good to be true. I would love to get into domaining, and I can do the above steps no problem - including the website design.

Is it really as simple as this?

Of course its not simple as that.
And of course its possible.
But its very long way between stating mini website and getting good traffic, and without traffic you are zero.
We all know good and expensive keywords, but our competitors also do.And they usually have more money-experience...
I would encourage you to buy one domain and try. Don't buy in bulk because you will not have enough time/energy to develop them all and you will stretch yourself.
Pick one, develop, build backlinks, add new content regularly, and modify content around keywords.
Don't lose your time on design,no one cares, every your visitor already knows you are not huge company with expensive offices, website etc.You need to provide info and advice to you visitor. Wordpress is perfect platform for this, its SEO friendly, and it takes you 1 minute to ad new content, and its very clean and easy to read.
And final advice, while making mini site don't think about adds, think about content. You need good content first if you want to have any visitors at all. When they start coming, then experiment with adsense or some other type advertising.
I hope it helps...

I would say a good keyword domain name with a mini-site and some traffic in a competitive niche would be worth at least $100.

However, you have to take into account domain name registration fees $10+/year and hosting fees $100+/year and any other fees related to the sale of your domain name including PayPal/auction fees.

So even if you manage to sell your domain name and mini-site for $100 you might be left with $40 profit for weeks worth of time.

Realistically, most people are not in this business to sell some domain names for $100. We want to hit the mother lode otherwise what's the point?

As with just about everything in life, if it was REALLY that easy EVERYBODY would be doing it and making hefty amounts of money. But it's not!

Enterscope summed it up pretty well above.

Time is money and every one of those steps you listed is going to take time, money or both! And there is still no guarantee you will find a buyer that will be interested in your domain and/or be willing to pay you what you are asking for it.

So step away from your keyboard and don't register any more domains until you have spent a LOT more hours learning what this business is really all about. Doing so will save you A LOT OF WASTED TIME AND MONEY in the long run.

Always remember...
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Yes. There are many people who do this every day and sell for a lot more than $100. I would say $400 would be the bare minimum for a good domain name.

The most important thing to remember is your domain name is your brand.

TestCase is right and you need to know the difference between a valuable domain & a worthless domain.

This is where most people fall flat on their faces.

There are literally thousands of sites probably already out there with good content in your niche. Most of the content is simply rewritten.

That is why you need a GREAT domain first. Something unique that an end user would want someday.

Figure this out and you will love this industry. Globalization is real and the rest of the world is getting online. There are fortunes to be made going forward.

5. Wait for traffic to build up

lol...Wait for traffic to build up.
That's funny.
Everyone here wishes that's all they had to do to get traffic is just wait.

Honestly if you have a good keyword domain you dont need traffic or a mini site to make a $100 on a name, if $100 is all you want to make.

I get $100 offers all the time on names that have no traffic and no site.
I got one today for RemarkableCloud (dot) com

Just pick a good keyword name and you will get a $100 for it if that's all you want.

Thanks for the responses. I'm probably going to give it a go once I've done some further research. I think probably two or three domains/mini sites and see what happens.

you should make compromise to make about something that is profitable, but that is not completely boring to you. Its hard because everything profitable is extremely boring and almost everything interesting is not payed, you will get 0.05$ clicks on subject that you can naturally write about without research.

Agreed. I will most likely stick to domains based on subjects that I am an expert in. Mainly IT/tech.

My take on flipping domains is its not easy, but its simple.. Just like golf is simple, but chances are you cant beat tiger woods

It used to be a lot easier 5 years ago.

I've bought a name in the past for reg fee and resold it for $200+ three weeks later more than once but I've also lost money on hundreds of domains that I shouldn't have bought.

It can be done and is done all the time but I keep out of it now as it isn't as easy as it used to be.

@BadBoyHouse The most domainer donยดt talk about how much money they lost with domains. But this happens all the time and the registrars get richer and richer.
"Domain Superstar" is a guy who tried many different things out and I believe he worked very hard until he found out what makes sense and is working well today. Domaining isnยดt easy and there are just too many in these field with much money and good connections. I wish you good luck ! Maybe in a year you are more realistic. Just try also different things out. Some will work and some not.

I would say - it's possible.

But from the BadBoyHouse's 5 steps I use 1-st and 5-th

Don't think that it's worth to create something (mini-site) on a domain to sell it.
Of course if you could create a mini-site in 5 mins - you could do it, but for me it's a complicated stuff.

And I would agree with VURG - couple of years ago it was a lot easier.

I too would agree with VURG It was much easier 5 years ago.

But don't let that stop you! there are still diamonds to be had. Just have to wade through far more crap these days to get to them.

The days of registering a domain and flipping it the very next week are not gone, you just have to know what it is your looking for, and please don't buy on impulse lol we have all done it and ended up with nothing for it :)

Good luck

In this business research is your best friend.

If you can learn what to buy, when to buy and why to buy you will be leaps and bounds above most domainers. Good Luck!

Don't underestimate development.

A simple minisite with 2 or 3 GREAT articles can increase the value 10 fold.

Note that I said great, not some average crap stolen from another site.

My goal is to have a minisite on all my domains. People use the internet for information, not PPC ads.

Sometimes we forget that domaining is profitable, but development is KING!

Start simple with a little keyword research, add a good article, throw up some adsense or affiliate products. Now you have a good asset.

It only has to make $10 per year to be profitable.

If you cannot make $1 per month, you are in the wrong biz!

Why minisite? Too many minisite addicts at NP. :imho:

I am not addicted to miniwhatwhats-looks soo cheap. Three articles and chuck some stock photos-and BAM: it's now a money machine! Not true-don't listen to guys who tell you this.

All we need now is some dude to protest and say otherwise (probably just to pump their minisite service). Truth is, minisites don't even go for $100-go to other forums-you'll see they are on sale for $25, with a domain. And is it selling like hot cakes at that price? No! Still no one wants them. I actually saw a couple for sale in this range at WF.

That's all it will ever be: a plain-ass minisite. It might look great to some here, but that is only when compared to a parked page and if you perhaps lack the ability to develop anything decent yourself.

Do you think most people on the net take a minisites seriously? No they won't, and they don't. It's a good alternative to parking, but it's hardly worth the effort. It does not increase the quality of the domain at all!! Contains soo little info-basically three pages of whatever and some crap photos. A minisite is an excuse used by people who buy crap domains to begin with.

Rather just buy a good domain or develop a good site with good content which is updated regularly-finish! You can make much more revenue this way.
