Dear All,
Sorry if my post bother you or is it require your much valuable time.
I am new in this group and need experts opinion and advises based on thinking to start domain buying and selling as part time business.

1. Your Suggestions is required that how to research on domain names?
2. what are the strategies of selecting a good domain name?
3. what are best registrar to purchase the domain names?
4. how to manage the domain inventory?
5. what is the average ROI time of a Domain?
6. To whom or how can take advises on domain names before purchase?
7. What majors has to take after agreed on any offer?
etc.

Actually, i am bit surprise from yesterday because of the following Sale, I also want to ask that is it really happens in this industry or it happens occasionally.

On 1st of March a Domain, keyp.com, came as available on a website. On the Same Day someone registered it, i lost it in thinking that either i would register it or not, anyway someone registered it and sell it on just after 3 days, on Namejet, in more then $5000.

Thank you SilentPtnr, i am hoping that @Kenny will see this message and will update me, i am bit confuse in which registrar is better to purchase the domain, because 1&1 is offering the domain is $0.99 but the normal price of domain is $11. so what are the hidden limitation or hurdle in selling if someone will purchase their domain with cheap registrars.

Welcome @Zubair Shaikh : wave :

Was this the thread you were thinking of @Silentptnr ?
https://www.namepros.com/threads/a-new-member-asks.973449/

The domain you were watching was caught by a dropcatcher and sent to auction, every dropping 4L (Four Letter) dot com will be acquired like this.

The hassles at 1&1 are not worth the price, join us in the Coupon section and there are better registrars with less hassle. AND probably don't buy anything yet anyway or you will waste any discounts on not so great domains : smile :

Thanks, Usernamex.
Yes, i am not buying anything right now, i am learning now a days but i think the problem is, for example if i select a domain name to purchase to whom i can discuss or to get suggestion. What I learn today is, its a game of luck and patience.

i will definitely join you guys in Coupon section.

personally to sell domain you'll need luck factor! :xf.grin: but of course, you can sell easily any domain often , if you agree with buyer price! i.e $1 per domain:xf.grin: but if you want to make profit, let say you buy hand reg $10 and you want to sell $5000 to end user! obviously you'll need luck and research! :xf.grin:

last time I sell dot US, 4L, I do hand reg, 99 cents! after 10 month ! some one buy my domain via afternic! for $250! and then I repeat again, not working :xf.laugh: I know most of webmaster prefer with short domain, or maybe CCtld, but it doesn't mean when you repeat again, with same method! will work again

well, of course, I do know when I have yes.com, I can sell that domain for at least $50k! but we all know we can't get that kind of domain! unless you want to spend tens thousand dollar!:xf.grin: but even if you do, it doesn't mean you'll make profit! :xf.grin: and just like I said, you'll need luck factor! :xf.grin:

btw, when I was new, I also think same like you! I miss the short domain! but actually not!:xf.laugh: some drop catcher company are ready to catch that domain name! so don't be sad, that kind of things always happen! if you want to get domain! go to godaddy, and make bid war!:xf.grin: because godaddy domain are untouchable for dropcatcher machine!:xf.grin: and Godaddy auction are open for everyone! as long you have money! :xf.grin:

my point is! you can't get good domain! so you'll need a luck factor!:xf.grin: even if you do! and spend money, you'll need luck also! ppl that brag in here, never tell their drama!:xf.grin: but if you one of them! I am sure you will undrestand, ! btw domain and forex almost same! you'll think it can be analyize, but the truth is you can't! but you can hope though:xf.grin:

its a lot of reading and leaerning.. trial and error too.

it only seems like luck when we're starting out and not know what we're doing. you will rarely hear old seasoned domainers speak of luck when talking of their successes.

i believe that the #1 mistake of newbies in domaining is to think its easy and fast money. in reality, it's anything but easy and anything but fast.

first there is a long and often expensive learning curve.. then if you did it correctly, and persisted, you will start making money... first of course with your sales you have to makeup for what you lost in your newbie learning curve.. then after your back to zero, profits should come. whether we like it or not, in time and as we continue to learn, we only become better at somehing.. not worse.. its the natural way of things. experience is everything.

the best indication you learned something from domaining is when you no longer see it as pure luck... and look back at your beginning days and see the mistakes you made as actual mistakes.. that's when you go to next stage imo. when you realize that who you were when you started, is distinctly different from who you are today. to me that means progress and right path of learning.

domaining gives you alot of freedom and choices. maybe in your past you were an owner of a used book store.. or clothing store.. carrying all kinds of inventory.. dirty.. dusty.. heavy.. big.. so imagine now.. your only inventory is virtual. no dust, no storage... only an internet connection.. whether its yoru laptop, phone, cafe internet etc.. I also see domaining as an infinite number of choices and possibiities.. in terms of niches, in terms of domains.. in terms of sale venues, inbound outbound etc.. and all this in my case only after few years of domaining, so I am only scratching surface with much left to learn...

if you have some sales skills it won't hurt either :)
but even those can be improved upon in time

all the best

enjoy

(enjoy being the keyword too)

The hassles at 1&1 are not worth the price
What "hassles" exactly???
I use 1and1 on a daily basis... and sold many 1and1 domains to endusers...
And the only one "hassle" I see there - full lack of bulk management.

Regarding $1.17 .com at 1and1...
This is so-called "Welcome Offer" for new customers only... and it is limited to 1 domain and to the USA.

$9.17 for others.

@Jurgen Wolf - my apologies, was thinking of NetSol : facepalm :

@alcy - that post is gold, thank you

@Zubair Shaikh - having a bunch of accounts with one or a handful of domains scattered everywhere can be overwhelming to a person new to domains. Or to anyone really, it takes a lot of effort to track! So the single dot COM offer at 1&1 for $1.17 is OK, yet since that is only good for a single domain you have an orphan domain to keep track of, even if you just transfer after 60 days. For the record, my registrar count is over sixty and transfer hopping is a profession to me - spreadsheets are fun and my schedule allows me enough time to manage all that.

Just starting out it is my opinion to just find a registrar you like with good basic prices and keep it simple and small while you learn.
My personal favorite registrars are Epik, Dynadot and Hexonet and Undeveloped has been good so far for a marketplace and landers.

Just my opinion, stay away from 1&1. One of the worst registrant i ever used

Thanks @MR Harrist , @alcy , @usernamex to give me better idea about domaining, i am learning on daily basis, instead of getting registering the domain i am enjoying just reading the post and discussions, that are worth to learn. I understand to have a small even 4 letter domain is useless if there is no buyer or you cannot find a buyer for it.

i believe that the #1 mistake of newbies in domaining is to think its easy and fast money. in reality, it's anything but easy and anything but fast.

@alcy , i was also thinking the same now the overall perception has been changed. now, i am searching , researching and researching.

As i am newbie, inexperienced, thats why i am lacking of someone to whom i can discuss before buying any domain, nobuddy in my circle. will you guys suggest me in this because i knew now, that the estibot value of a domain is $2500 is very difficult to sale it in $50 and nobuddy is even like to appraise on my domain here. ;)

Registrar, i have shortlisted, i.e. Namecheap, godaddy, NameSlio.
