Backorder? What is it? How it works?

I've seen the term "backorder" has been used in these forums a lot, but I don't know what it is exactly.

I understand you can "backorder" a domain that is not available, by paying a fee (higher thab the usual reg fee), but I have some questions...

• what happens if the domain does not become available soon?
• if there's a domain name that you like and that is not for sale, can you just backorder it?
• what if the current owner renews it?
• what happens if someone backorders one of my domains?
• can you backorder any domain, or only those pending deletion?

  If the domain you backordered gets renewed, then you should be able to get a credit to backorder another domain or get a refund. This really depends upon the terms and conditions of the site you placed the backorder at.

  If someone backorders one of your domains, then it is possible that person might end up with your domain if you ever fail to renew it.

  You should be able to backorder the domain at any time and not just when it is pending deletion.

  as far as I remember at godaddy you pay for backorder + monitoring. They notify you if the domain renewed, or if it goes into redemption/deletion. If the capture is not successful (or if the domain is renewed and you don't want to wait another year to see if it is going to be renewed then, you can reassign the backorder/monitoring to a different domain name

If you use Namejet, backordering is free, in the sense that you only pay if you are the only person to have backordered that name when it drops. At that point, you pay, but the domain is yours. If others have backordered it too, then it goes into an auction, participated by only those who backordered the domain, assuming it actually becomes available.

$69 is the minimum backorder fee to win a name there.
