I registered .berlin names in the free promo offer during the year 2014. Since the last 2 months I received dozens of letters by post from InternetX in German regarding the expiration and the renewal invoices.

Yesterday, I received an email from Alexandra Gaus from InternetX

Dear Customer,

The following summary contains due entries that have not been paid yet. We
kindly ask you to check this billing information

and to promptly balance out the debt by 2015/10/09. Please include the
mentioned invoice numbers as a reference on your bank transaction form. All
concerned domains or servers as well as logins will be terminated or locked
if the outstanding debts are not paid by the indicated date. All domains
will be returned to their respective registries which will result in more
costs for your business. We will also take legal action in order to recover
our losses. In case the debt has been balanced out in the meantime, please
disregard this letter.

Alexandra Gaus

My response to their email was

This was a free .berlin domain name I registered during the promo last year. I have no interested in renewing free domain names.

Please terminate and lock my account if you wish to do so.

Thanks
Charley

They replied with the following

Hi Charley,

that were your work to delete the domain before due date. So you have to pay for it.

Alexandra

1. This is nonsense. How do I report it to ICANN?

2. Have any of you received letters and emails from InternetX?

InternetX is a very legit and large company situated in germany

promos have certain rules
better read them before you act

i think they are a good company and been around for a long time.

unlike others they do renew on debit which means if you have a domain set to renew automatically they will renew it first and send you the invoice afterwards even if your account balance is zero.

that is how they operate. With this type of biling you need to be careful that you don't renew domains that you don't want to.

Cannot comment on the promo.

you are right no catch to a promo

just when renewed you pay full price
and renewal is automated
which is great

when you get a domain at godaddy for 0.99$
you don't expect them to renew it for 0.99$ don't you?

You have the choice to not renew it though.

I haven't checked, but I wouldn't be surprised if .berlin domains are like .de: you have to expressly renounce them, otherwise they get renewed (and billed) forever.
So even if you don't pay the registrar, the domain will enter transit status and Denic will take over and demand fees.
Read the terms carefully.

I don't know anything about .berlin
but I know a lot about .de

if you don't actively delete or transit them to denic
they will be renewed
true for all registrars I have used

if you don't pay for renewal
you may lose your account at your registrar

if the registrar does not renew the .de domain
it is given back to the denic

they will send you an invoice of about 50 euro per domain

if you don't pay
the domain will go into pending delete
and finally after a few weeks expire

thats it
