Been in the domain game for a while now.
People are sold the idea that getting the right domain can make them a lot of money. This idea is largely false as the majority of good domains have already been registered. People get lucky very rarely with a handregistration. The success stories are told over and over. But for each one there are hundreds of thousands of ones that go nowhere.

OK now on to how else to get a good domain. Drops and expired auctions. Entire industries have been setup for this. But guess who makes the most money on this? The companies that sell peoples expired domains after collecting renewal fees (double dipping). The auctions are either inflated or not representative of the actual price. There have been many times I've purchased at auction at domain with like 200 bids and sold for 800+. Then you list it on Sedo. And you get people offering maximum $100 paid. Most times these people cancel the negotiations even if you price it at 1000. So 20 bidders bid a domain up to 800 at auction. And the most you are offered is 1/8th of it? Companies like Godaddy are making a killing. I don't know if they are shill bidding but someone is willing to pay 790 at auction. But no one is willing to pay more after?

Domaining is largely a pyramid scheme. Why? Because the people that make the money have largely all been decided. There will always be success stories. But the majority of people who enter it fail. The big companies make all the money. And they sucker the average joe into believing a dream that doesn't exist.

It's like a lottery. The guy with the winning numbers is happy. But everyone else loses. Yet people get hope because of the story of the guy who won.

Domaining can be many different things, depending on how it's done.

However, before claiming that domains is a pyramid scheme you might want to do a search and see exactly what a pyramid scheme is and how it works. Domaining doesn't operate and work like a pyramid scheme. If that was the case the new domainers would have limits on how much they can sell a domain for and the domains previous owner would get a cut of that.

Like I said above, domaining can be different things, but a pyramid scheme it is not. Do a Google/Bing/etc. search and perhaps find out what exactly a pyramid scheme is before claiming that domaining is one.

Hmm I just think the op used the wrong term comparing domain to a pyramid scheme since the end result of such is that the people at the bottom end up with zero.

In domain there is no bottom. There are simply domains with value, high ,mid, low, or no value to anyone.

If you are fotunate enough to be in domains early and learned the business and followed trends most likely you will sell for profit.

Not all your domains of course but some people develop too so value in a site is another niche to profit.

In 3 years I've sold only a hand full of them and felt I was lousy at it and that everyone seemed to be getting rich but not me .

I still feel I'm not a very good domainer after 10 years simply because I never committed to the trend until it was too late it seems.

The op is simply frustrated seeing the huge sales and profits they are missing out on due to many factors.

Hey op you are not alone but keep in the game and maybe one day you will hit a vein of domain gold to warrant the hard times.

The whole world is a giant pyramide sheme and domaining is just a small part of it.
At the end the whole domainindustry is financed by endusers - equal if they are (big or small) companies or private (big or small) domainholders.

It is common for new entrants to be attracted to domaining because a review of the published sales reports (many which I do not believe are true arm's length transactions) makes it appear that domaining is an easy way to make a lot of money. The reality for most participants is that domain names are an easy way to lose a lot of money. Only a small percentage of domain investors actually make a living from selling domains.

What I find most frustrating as a financial professional who sees how much companies spend on advertising, travel, professional services, IT costs, etc. why it is they view domain names as $XX items. True not every domain is worth six figures or more but there is a wide gap between the way domains are generally valued in today's marketplace (trivial expenses like a hosting account or logo) vs. how other normal operating expenses of five or six figures are just the cost of doing business. Yet a domain name is not only the entry point (online) to a business' website, but its brand - how the business is known by a company's customers and to an extent how it obtains customers which drive its business.

like any business of course the majority will fail. domaining is not for everyone. you have to find out what you excel at and how you can put it to use to make money. it doesn't have to be domaining.

The biggest problem too is the sheer number of domain variations buyers can choose from.

Its really mind boggling! Too much supply too little buyer.

Domaining is a simply great business. I believe it's future business, it's just growing more and more everyday,, More people use internet more websites created and more domains are going to be used everyday in future.
We just enter into digital age, digital properties become like real world properties.I can't see any better investment at the moment considering next 5-10 years. You can invest on properties, stocks, currencies, gold etc.. but all their values are uncertain in future.

After going through the thread, I would still stick to my initial reaction on this. It is a sort of an MLM pyramid where in the top few succeed and the rest are left holding the domains, till a point they no longer can or want to renew the domains. I agree patience is the key for any business. How many years one can wait is the core of this business. But with other investments like say property, stock, currency, gold, commodity etc, you never have anything tangible with you. So you invest once and even if something goes wrong (except for stock/currency) say property, gold, commodity you can use the product. Time and again - I hear "amazing sale stories" for domain names - like I hand registered for a $ and within a week sold it for XXXX or just picked up a domain at a drop and I already had a buyer who was willing to pay XXX. So each time - my only message has been - sell me one of my domains and then I would agree that this domaining business is for real - and no one has even once - let me repeat - no one has even once offered that they can try and sell one of my domains at even XX or XXX, which makes me believe that all these stories are fake. I can agree if I have a 20 character .something as my domain and then if I expect either XX or XXX then I am a fool, but when I have a 15 year old domain - brandable - keyword match - with good searches - good CPC of over $1.5 and yet people offer me X or XX it really makes me wonder if either I am a really poor investor in domains, doing something drastically wrong or I am doing it right but the intermediates are the ones negotiating on behalf of a client, picking up a domain at a very low cost and then selling it at the right industry price for a hefty amount. So in the end the person who renewed the domain all these years does not make a dime but the trader who just got it from one person and sold it to the other makes 100% or even 1000% by just changing hands. Till a point I get some sales from my domains even at mid XX I will continue to believe that this is a pyramid and will agree with the OP till that point I am proven wrong by having some sales from domaining.

Lottery, yes. Pyramid scheme, no.

A pyramid scheme requires someone at the end of the line with nobody left to sell to. That situations doesn't exist in domaining and never will. There will always be buyers at some price.

Look, its a tough game and if you don't have the pockets or the time, it likely will end in disappointment and disillusionment. IMO, you get better at picking winners as you get more experience. But you have to be able to fund and survive those early mistakes. Not sure how long you have been in it, but since it looks like you are new to NamePros, I would think maybe not so long. And if I'm wrong and you just weren't involved on NP, then you missed a key step...networking with other domainers. if you have been in the game for 5 years with no success, you are doing something wrong. On the other hand if you have been in the game 5 months, that's the price to play.

I too would agree with @domainsoup that this is nothing but a pyramid. When you have aged domains, they say keyword domains so you go ahead and buy aged keyword domains, they say numerics are the rage, when you have numerics they say LLLs are the craze, and when you buy that they say oh but not to my liking and you are the last man standing with the domain. I personally have a strong feeling that this is nothing but a way to get new users to enter the domaining world and then you are stuck with all kinds of domains and no one ready to buy it even for $XX! What do you think in such a stage?

I think you should stop following trends and focus on quality domains supported through solid metrics. Also, stop listing domains for sale on RESELLER marketplaces and pick up the phone and start dialing. I can't understand why you are surprised with low prices when you are targeting resellers and not end users.

I have been told time and again that it amounts to SPAM. dialing someone or emailing someone with a business message amounts to SPAM and if you think otherwise would like to know how to directly contact someone / email someone in a way that it does not amount to SPAM

I don't think doing research to find the right person and them calling them is SPAM. Unsolicited emails are often considered SPAM. But if you are afraid of being called a spammer, then you shouldn't do it. I personally have no problem with it, that's one way I sell domains, and I know I'm not alone in that.

If someone tells you to buy a plot of land in the middle of the desert and you do, it's just like handregging xx931dprtz.xyz because someone tells you both are the next big thing. If you buy the right apartment in Manhattan or the best keyword .COM and can't improve upon or flip either, you're going to lose money.

Meanwhile, I couldn't read every post in the thread completely, but I don't think anyone actually bothered to point out what a pyramid scheme actually is. So here it is:

And so, indeed, by technical definition, domaining is NOT a pyramid scheme. We know plenty of people here who have made more than people who've been in longer. I've been around since 2000 and I know people here who have done and are doing better than me in less time, or even annualized. A pyramid scheme would mean that anyone who buys a name for me would never be able to earn more than me. And I know that too isn't the case.

Some posts said lottery... but you can't call it lottery because education can improve your odds of success pretty drastically. If it were a lottery, you COULD buy xx931dprtz.xyz and be just as likely to make money as the guy who buys a top keyword .COM... Obviously, that's not the case. For domaining to be compared to an actually lottery, it'd be like having the psychic powers of knowing what 2 of the 5 balls were going to be for sure with the PowerBall. ;)

Absolutely. You CAN get lucky... You can buy 50 acres of beautiful land in the middle of no where with the hunch that a highway and commerce center will be coming through in the next few years. And you can end up right about that -- but it doesn't make real estate all one big lottery. and get in ahead of trends. So folks who watched 3N take off and start buying 4N early, and then followed through to 5N and then 6N used observation and reasoning to have a first mover advantage. That's not a pyramid or a lottery. Risk vs reward, for sure -- buying that land in the middle of no where is more a risk than buying a lot with easy comps on either side. You can boo hoo on the reason why numerics have done what they've done over the past decade, and you can boohoo about how this new highway is a bad idea... but that doesn't mean it's either a lottery or a pyramid.

When you arrive in a new area and want to introduce yourself to the neighbours, you knock on the door first, you don't just kick it down.
