Advertising promotions push the website designation and I believe most people think it stands for website rather than Western Samoa (except for domainers, that is)...

I've had good luck traffic wise with .ws and one of my .ws produces daily revenue for me

I really like WorldSite...they advertise .WS as a global extension and the search engines treat them as such so world site just seems like a natural fit

I like worldsite too. That has a good sound to it. Keep'em coming.

I'm using a few of them... mainly to help subsidize Bob Parson's NFL commercials I suppose.

I may actually break even on reg fee with PPC on one of them. Anyway, the few I have are probably a better gamble than a Vegas slot machine.

Why does it have to mean anything?

If it's a premium domain I don't think it needs to stand for anything. Let's face it, it's near impossible to get a decent domain on .com or even .net now.
Why not get a great name on a lesser known extension than a poor name on a TLD?

It's just an alternative IMO.

Exactly, it doesn't have to mean a thing. I've always maintained that what's to the left of the dot is way more important than what's to the right..

But, consider this... if the ext can be marketed as actually meaning something other than just being an obscure ccTLD, doesn't it make it easier to sell?

Personally, I can get excited when someone tells me that .ws actually means "website".. Western Samoa just doesn't do it for me..

.WS means Western Samoa, nothing else. I heard it being branded as WebSite and WorldSite (WomenS is new to me) but really it just means Western Samoa. Like it or not, you're buying a domainname in an obscure island state, and the more advanced internet user will know it doesn't mean WebSite.

Good for a personal site, but wouldn't rely on it for business purposes, as it seems just a tiny unprofessional.

I second Gerrit advise, stay away from .ws there are much better extensions for business purpose.

And you want businesses to buy your domains.

I disagree. Perception is everything. There is a large group of people who don't know what .ws stands for. It's a very short and easily brandable extension that doesn't register in the average mine like .us, .in, and so on. Although intended for Western Samoa, the extension has pretty much grown to mean something else. Great keywords and names are still available for a measly $9.99 reg. fee at Godaddy.

Nonsense ..

I make mid XX,XXX a year off my .ws

no one gives cares about what an extension really means they are just clicking links that meet their search .. no one dosent click a link in a search engine because it's .ws .. no more than they do click because it's .com

Bidawinner is right, the content is often and pretty much always more important than the extension. Look at whois.sc, del.icio.us and most importantly bigoo.ws, a top 5,000 website with the .ws extension. People are becoming more and more aware that dotcom is not the only extension on the web.

From a pure domain speculation standpoint, you can't really go wrong with a solid .ws. They aren't in the same league as dotcoms but they aren't completely worthless either. WebSite.ws markets this extension to stand for "WebSite" similar to VeriSign and the .tv extension. Yes, their origins are as ccTLDs for Western Samoa and Tuvula but that doesn't really matter. Look at Moldova's ccTLD, .md, for instance. It is marketed as the medical extension by max.md and others. No medical professional actually knows that it is the ccTLD of Moldova.

The main thing that seperates these extensions from the big ccTLDs (.de, .co.uk, etc.) is that they have global appeal, while the big ccTLDs define their given countries. Yes, you still have .net, .org, .info and .biz as top contenders but like dotcom and the other top ccTLDs all of the good ones are already taken for the most part. These extensions may not be tremendously popular now but they are growing and a good bet for the future as the dotcom namespace depletes and people are forced to look for alternative extensions.

I'm going to create a new word.

Genericability

The .ws extension, amongst others, have a great genericability that many other domains lack. If you want a business domain, .info and .org just don't work. The .net might work but at the same time it's associated moreso with networks. Your audience is larger than just the .us, .co.uk and so on markets so you need to pick up another extension that fits the bill. Now you have .ws (.cc and .tv) that work well and are very short.

As I said earlier, it's also perception. It doesn't matter a lick that they are for Western Samoa or any other place, they're seen through a different light and that's how it is.

I've got several .ws sites and around 150+ .ws domains myself, and I've sold a few in the low. $x,xxx range and several in the $xxx range so it's certainly possible to sell them for good $$$...

But now I'm changing my focus to development instead of trying to sell them, since (as someone mentioned here) it's much better IMO to build a site using great name/keyword on a lesser known extension than a poor name on a TLD..

I've got most of my .ws listed here:
Unique .ws domains
The site is a bit outdated, but I'll do some "spring cleaning" in there soon...

And I'm also quite happy with my latest .ws: Technology.ws
Got a few plans for that one now.. B-)
("The Technology Website"??)

I once wanted to buy a .ws for a comic site, but I couldn't find any registerars that I liked whom registered them, so I ended up not getting it.
