Iranian Apocalypse Aug 22nd?

In a WALL STREET JOURNAL op-ed Tuesday, Princeton's Bernard Lewis writes: "There is a radical difference between the Islamic Republic of Iran and other governments with nuclear weapons. This difference is expressed in what can only be described as the apocalyptic worldview of Iran's present rulers."

"In Islam as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time -- Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined."

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the US about nuclear development by Aug. 22," which this year corresponds "to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to 'the farthest mosque,' usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1).

"This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind."

Most people have the belief that the end is nearing?
I don't think so.

That article was written with no basis in fact.
It's purely opinion.

I am ready when it happens,,,with no reserve...Although my religion does not allow for "Nostradamus" nor any other predictions...We all know the world will end...It's just a matter of when....All i can really say is....If your not right with God...Get right with him....I don't beleive you have to attened church to be right with God...Although church is serving the Lord...You can get right with God in your own bed room,Kitchen,Where ever you choose to do so...Nice read dave..Thanks

and what would be the point in "getting right with god" , can anyone even proves he exists? and its highly likely that when we die that we just die and thats the end of our story! nobody can prove that god or an imortal omnipresent , omnipotent and omniscient being exists.

And the end is not nearing in my opinion, i bet that all the time , even thousands of years ago, people thought the end of the earth was near, cuban missle crisis was also another point when everyone thought world war 3 would start. Why should this be the end of the world, the end of israel maybe, but i doubt that they will be able to do this.

The religious motivations behind the events currently in motion are definitely worth taking a look at.. helps to understand a few things and put them in perspective.

And what about the possible motivations of 'The Shrub' AKA George W Bush? This is his holy war too.

The end of the world is likely not upon us. Then again, I am a glass-half-full kinda gal. The Iraninan President was voted in by default and most likely becuase Bush assisted in this in some way. The Iiraninan President eggs the oppsing world powers on, calling bluffs and engages in his own wild west talk. A.k.A President Bush.

Forgive the political rant, but I felt a need to respond, especially as Once lived there. Its all so sad, as a peaceful protester of all of the dividing lines, I wish everyone well.

Peace and out...

I believe that the world will end on a millenium. We still have 994 years left to live.

Haha, you know, this is just another load of balls that someone thinks. It's OPINION!

What about 6-6-06...people said that the world was going to end on that day because of the "666". Did it happen? No!
And you'd think that because of the 666, it would be quite beleivable that the world could have ended on that day, but didn't.

I do not belieive anything that people say, like this.

It's just not programmed in the human mind that we can fortell the future and everyones fate.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but Muslims kind of beleive that killing yourself and other people is good. Correct me if im wrong here.

That isn't entirely correct. Bush and the neo-cons started the war in Iraq for several reasons, many of which were never vocalized to the public. The biggest reason for toppling Saddam was an attempt to break up OPEC by pumping Iraq's oil well above the low OPEC quota that is set for it.

The problem for Bushie et al was that Big Oil had other plans. Big Oil's profits skyrocket when there is instability and in the end, Big Oil won the battle over the neo-cons.

Oil is over $75/ barrel and oil companies are reaping massive profits. BP just announced it was shutting down a major pipeline in Alaska, which will further put a pinch on supply (BP knew of the problems on this pipeline for years, but failed to do anything about it, except fire, ridicule, and slam any whistleblower that spoke of the corrosion problems).

Read Greg Palast's Armed Madhouse for more info or read his lastest piece here: http://www.gregpalast.com/section/articles He is a well respected reporter who actually checks his facts (and dislikes Democrats and Republicans alike).

Yep, because it reminds the rest of us how smart we are (that is, the ones who didn't vote for him).
