Internet Grows to More Than 233 Million Domain Names in the First Quarter of 2012

RESTON, VA, Jul 13, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- More than seven million domain names were added to the Internet in the first quarter of 2012, bringing the total number of registered domain names to more than 233 million worldwide across all domains, according to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief, published by VeriSign, Inc. VRSN +1.50% , the trusted provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world.

The increase of 7.5 million domain names equates to a growth rate of 3.3 percent over the fourth quarter of 2011, and marks the fifth straight quarter with greater than two percent growth. Registrations have grown by more than 23 million, or 11 percent, since the first quarter of 2011.

116.7 million .com + .net active domain names. This is amazing man.

It's taken 25 odd years to reach 233 million.

Probably take another 25 for it to reach 1 billion.

But it should increase to 400 million or so in the next 3/5 years, so interesting times, remember the renewal fees on 400 million names is $4 billion a year (approx).
