Well, maybe not directly but massive computer centers generate ALOT of heat and consume huge amounts of energy.. it certainly isn't helping the environment that we sit here, day after day, typing posts into NamePros when we should be outside planting a tree :p

Read: Massive Computer Centers Bad for the Environment

There's been a lot of hand-wringing lately about how much air traffic contributes to global warming. But another damaging culprit has recently been found: the Internet. Computer centers consume massive amounts of energy, and their use is growing astronomically.

Anybody up for a one day boycott of the Net? Can we get something started here? Can we blog about it? One day won't change anything, but one day at a time will.

What are you thoughts? Can you stay offline for 24 hours? Let's pick a date!

Crosspost this to other forums.. :D

Well first of all, I cannot stay offline for 24 hours :D

With emailing less real mails are sent, with positive impact on the nature..
With less letters, less trees to be cut (positive impact on global warming) etcetera etcetera

And for information we do not have to drive with our cars to the libary but simply click to wikipedia. Or to play games at the casino we do not have to drive or fly to las vegas!

So well yes, internet has some neg. effects on global warming, but much more positive effects!

And thanks to the internet we can access information about global warming easily!

good pts luffo.

global warming is a hoax to tax humanity.

google the 31,000 (9000 Phd) scientists who have signed the petition stating their is not evidence to warrant that carbon is creating a rise in temperature.

Plus - An increase in global temperatures of a degree or two would actaully improve vegetation and life. It was much hotter 1000 years ago when the vikings walked and cultivated Greenland which is now frozen tundra.

There was the 'global cooling' propaganda in the 70s, now this... Do your own research and draw your own conclusion. Don't let anyone tell you what to believe about this or anything else.

In reality, there has not been an increase in global temperatures since 1998.

But seriously.. can you see my point? It has to start somewhere.

Green technology is a start and we have the power to make people sit up and listen.

I, for one, can stay offline for a mere 24 hrs to make a point and I bet you can too. Who's with me?

What date can we pick? Maybe we can go in shifts ;)

Luffo, I'm assigning you all the days that end in "Y".. please stay offline on those days! :p

All you domainers with green domains, I challenge you to join in!

PS: this is really a push for green tech.. one day can make a difference.

So let's put this into the larger context. Al Gore invented the internet. The internet causes global warming. Al Gore fights global warming. Therefor:

Gore has created the largest ever make-work program. :hehe:

It's called "job security".

Can you stay offline for 24 hours?

No because I have far too many websites to maintain. Would I like too? Oh hell yeah! Heck I can barely stay away from NP that long! :)

Then maybe we can have people pledge a certain amount of time they will stay offline.. an hour being the minimum? And no peeking allowed!

I think they have actually found that rather that save trees and paper, it has actually done the opposite. In stead of using tippex/white out to correct errors - people just print another copy and proof read it again.

Actually one of the main problems causing globalwarming is the co2 produced when people drive their cars, therefore when they are on the internet they are not likely to be driving...at least I hope not!

I'm all for reducing co2 output but when everybody shuts down their computers they may be doing other things that produces even more co2. BTW, which produces the most....tv or pc ?

I'm not thinking it's so much the PC's themselves as the computer centers/servers used to drive the Internet. Thankfully, more and more PC's are getting "greener" but unfortunately, the computer centers are not compensating as quickly..

I love it! :) Great comments.

What I can't stand is that if you question the "theory" of global warming, you are all of a sudden someone who hates the environment. Quite the contrary! In fact, I'm concerned that we'll be so focused on "global warming" that when the Earth's temperature begins to fall again (since global temperatures are cyclical) we will miss it and be caught by surprise.

I watched Al Gore's fictional piece "An Inconvenient Truth" and couldn't stand the liberal rhetoric thrown in. He could have made the same message without bitching about Republicans or showing his disdain for the Bush family.
