I've been active in the domain business for more than five years, and today I read this blog comment, "Chase Your Tail - Longtail, That Is." [5th comment down]

Something is wrong when information this important is not freely distributed to every domain newbie. I've been able to figure-out a lot of this stuff over the past several years, but the fact of the matter is that, for domainers in the know, this is apparently old news. Where are the mentors in our industry who know these things, and why isn't it talked about loudly and often?

I have been reading posts for several years and have not read any information as the one posted in the above thread. But I have said before itโ€™s not always the information you get from what you hear ( or read ) but the information that is intentionally NOT posted.

I know of an instance a popular Bloger that sells monthly services who posted a similar thread on his blog. Later (several days) I went back to it only to find that it was deleted. I emailed him asking for the info and he said it was only available for clients. If you are new to Domaining save yourself some pain and read the thread above. You ask โ€œwhere are the Professionals and the Mentors" well they are busy telling people that the names they have are useless but never really "whyโ€.

You see if they did that then they would have little to post or talk about and then people wouldnโ€™t pay any attention to them. Then what would they do?

A lot of people have been talking about domain development lately -- I have, Jamie over at DotWeekly has, Elliot from Elliot's Blog, Morgan from Domainvestors.tv, Mike from WannaDevelop.com, Ross from ygrab.com, etc. Bookmark all the domaining.com blogs, find yourself a few favorites which talk about domain development, and start developing! :)

It is terribly common to find .com, .net, and .org all taken by speculators and either parked or don't resolve. As a developer who builds content sites with content in hopes of organic traffic I am happy to take the .info or even .us. I can't prove it, but don't think the search engines care about TLD. In any case I am confident I can outrank parked sites with ease. I think it will be years before most of the .com's are actually developed.

As I watch the news about the global economic meltdown I have been registering .us under the theory that national pride may boost the value of the TLD.

I used to have a few developed .infos in the past and I swear having .info in the TLD helped the rank better for keyphrases along the lines of "keyword information".

I've been one of the .com "developer guys", for 15 years ( my trader rating should verify this :P) and I totally agree with Alan. So many people out there fire up a new blog, they write about everything they can find and 4 weeks later they consider themself pro's.

This is not a matter of telling "newbies" or beginners about the secrets of domaining, it's all about watching the blogs/websites that matter (ie domaining.com) and forget about the rest. It's all about who you should listen to and who you should ignore. Learn from the best and ignore the rest.

And what about Mark's comment? Well, he hit the nail on the head. That's the only way to go if you want to make a great stable income in the long run.

Yeah exactly right IMO. I mean, before the recession I made quite a tidy profit from flipping domains in the reseller market (buying for low $xxx, selling for high $xxx a couple of weeks later - I've done this a few times, etc) - however this isn't an easy way to make money, the market is too unpredictable.

Another option may be to wait until a recession, buy a bunch of generic .coms and LLL.com domains and wait until things are good again - but this has a high barrier to entry and 'waiting out' the global economic cycles to do this dilutes any profit you can make.

So that's reselling out and buying amazing quality domains out. That just leaves development ;)
