DNJournal.com has been publishing weekly domain sales since 2002. Among the extensions that are reported include cctlds (which are country code domains) like .co.uk , .de, .fr, .in, .cn etc . The most reported cctld has been .de (Germany) and then .co.uk (UK) , but for the first time this week we saw 2 .IN (India) domains lead the pack in price reported. http://dnjournal.com/domainsales.htm
Here are some comparisons of Domain Names registered and overall country population to put things in perspective:
China (.CN) - 20 million domains registered - 1.4 Billion Population
Germany (.DE) - 16 million domains - 82 Million Pop
UK (.CO.UK) - 11 million domains - 65 Million Pop
Netherlands (.NL) - 6 million domains - 17 Million Pop
India (.IN/.CO.IN) - 2 million domains - 1.3 Billion Pop
Per capita, Netherlands is far and away the leader. India on the other hand has a long way to go to reach even the per capita domain numbers of China. The potential clearly for .IN is huge, with growing GDP and English being the primary business language. India already has 450 million plus internet users, how long before they translate to Domain Name registrations is TBD
