we are now in 1997.. almost all the domain names are available.
Imagine that you know the future, and you know that "domaining" will be a big business.
But, the problem that you can't buy more than 3 domains... which 3 domains you will choose to buy?
for me:
1 - business.com
2 - why.com
3 - answer.com

What about you?

Great thread idea!

1. Cars.com
2. NewYork.com
3. Sports.com

I would consider these my best registrations. I am going to assume that if we picked names like Google and Yahoo those companies would have just found different ones and still been as wildly successful.

Was anyone here domaining in 1997? Did any of you guys have the foresight to select some great one word category killer domains?

I was there, had very limited funds, Network solutions required a two year registration at $35/yr and it was not clear to me which of the .com, .net, or .org tld's would be the strongest. Three letter dot coms were available but who would ever pay money for something like qxz.com :(

1. Love.com
2.Insurance.com
3. Fly.com - on this domain I would create a minisite dedicated to the movie The Fly, because after I would sell Insurance.com I could be such an idiot and use fly.com that way :)

There is one interesting thread here :) - http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/738205-i-made-history.html

See this thread dated MARCH'15 of 1985.
And see the early domain registrations! :)

I would register:

sex.com
business.com
porn.com

Insurance.com (promptly built into THE insurance leadgen platform)
Poker.com (promptly built into THE poker affiliate/rakeback platform, tens- if not hundreds- of millions made from 2003-2010)
Lawyers.com (promptly built into THE geotargeted legal services lead gen platform)

Although variants of "insurance" names may actually be more lucrative over the long term, like "CarInsurance.com", etc... and Forex.com would be tempting.

Really, though, if I could go back to 1995 internet with 2012 knowledge, I wouldn't even focus on 'domaining'. I'd focus on team building, hiring and building out the applications that would come to define the web.

I don't like this kind of threads because I started in 2003 and at this time you could hand register ccc.com's, lll.org's and lll.info's :)

So if I were back in 2003 I would register a lot of this 3 char domains.

It would be a fun tool if Verisign had something to check availability status on a certain date.

What a useless thread.

Stop dreaming, start to think about what could be worth in 10 years from now.

I disagree :hi:
That's one of the mistakes beginners make.
Trying to speculate on what is going to be possibly worth something 10 years from now is almost guaranteed to fail.

Instead, invest in domains that are already worth something today. I mean, a domain that is bad today will remain as bad in the future :tu:

I don't think the idea of registering google or facebook (unless your intention is to create facebook) are the good ideas, cause first of all - these days for google you would receive max. 100 offer, and second - google could choose another brand.

You should invest in real values: love, sex, porn and rock n roll :)
