how would the game/market be different?

The registry owns the domains and if you don't pay they are released so its like everyone is leasing domains.

What if domains costed like $x,xxx+ but you could fully own them (no renewals and yours forever)

Well, I'd prefer paying $10.00 for the next 50 years as opposed to paying $X,XXX up front.

The up front cost would have to be a lot lower.
