Dynadot โ€” .com Registration $8.99

IDNs

I'm thinking about getting into IDNs but don't want to make mistakes registering the wrong translations & wasting money on it!

1. What sites do you use to translate English words into IDNs?
2. Which extentions would you invest in, eg. com, net, etc.
3. Where's the best place & cheapest place to register them? I know Dynadot does them. Do they allow you to "taste" IDNs as well?
4. What languages would you recommend sticking to?

Feedback on the above would be appreciated.

1. Doesn't the registration company do it for you? What happens if you paste a domain name with chinese characters or accents?
2. Not all extensions support IDNs. I would stick with com atm.
3. Dunno
4. Good question, anyone has stats?

1. Google translate & various sites that offer "the top 500 most common words" in various languages.

2. Stick with .com at the moment. IDNs are still are a relative gamble so stick to the best.

3. I would register at Moniker (I do) - not only do they allow tasting, they are cheap (in relation to many other registrars) and they allow tasting.

4. I only have IDNs in Russian - common words like "Month.com" (in Russian, obviously) get about 100 uniques per month. I have noticed a gradual increase as people obviously become more IDN aware.

Good Luck!

1. There's a boatload of online dictionaries for specific languages. A simple search for the language of your preference will turn up a few. Use the results in conjunction with google search, google trends, and local serch engines depending on your target market, local overture results, and you will get a general idea wether or not your translation is correct.

2. COM and/or the appropriate cctld if IDN compatible.

3. Moniker, Dynadot (both allow tasting) and Domainsite.

4. Most people will suggest the languages with the widest user-base e.g. Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, French, Japanese, Hindi...

You will find the best IDNs in these languages are taken, therefore, try buying some in the secondary market - there are some IDN specific forums - Snapnames, or try your hand at lesser languages.

Don't know if I can post links to related forums or resource sites, so try following some signature links from posters here...

Country codes are always a good choice too, especially when the .coms have been heavily mined for your target lanaguage - of course I mean the country code that matches the script you're using!

.com - gold standard
.{country-code} - weaker today but serious rivals in future
.net - solid, just like in ASCII
.{everything else} - don't waste your time

The second largest bet today besides english is no doubt with Japanese IDN domains. It's the second largest economy in the world and already is supported by adsense and other ppc programs. Online advertising is a large category already and growing. In terms of extension I would invest in .JP / .COM / .NET in that order. Many of us who live and work in Japan will attest that .JP will be more valuable than .COM - no need to give you the why - takes too long to explain.

If you want to make a bet on sheer population then go with China, but because the government is so random and rule of law seems not to favor foreign investors in anything (domains or otherwise) I personally steer clear of them. Many other IDNers are into Chinese however. But for this bet to pay off, the per capita gdp is going to have to catch up to the population count!
