I am just getting into domaining, and have sent off only a handful of unresponded to e-mails to try and sell my couple domains so far... But it strikes me that most established companies will not be willing to purchase another domain when they already have one that they think is working sufficiently.

Therefore, I thought it might be a better use of my time and effort to try and find newly starting up companies. Ideally, these companies wouldn't even have a domain name yet, or at least they would not have an established, trafficked website that they were attached to already.

But... how to find these starting up companies?? That is the question.

Hmm interesting point. But the problem is most startups consider the availability of the domain name as part of their branding so it's unlikely that they will start a business without a domain name that fits their brand. But it's actually a valid idea.

I often thought about this as well. Sometimes you can read reports on a new product or biz and they dont own the domain name yet. But on the other hand they prob wont have capital to make a big purchase on a domain and could even settle for a gtld or one of the new extenttions "to be different" so it sounds good but could be a long shot.

Hi,

I think your idea about finding start-ups sound good, but I disagree with the point that established businesses are not interested in acquiring more domain names. They do it all the time. Almost all my sales have been to companies who already have a Website.

Only meant it might be an easier sale pound for pound.

I have set up a few companies in the course of my life, and each time I secure the domain name before doing incorporation, but after doing some TM checks of course. And I know I am not alone, this is more and more going to be the norm. Smart people think ahead, and will be reluctant about choosing a name they can't brand freely.

The problem is always the same: if you have the right domains, end users will find you. Focus more on the domains, and less on the the target customers. Of course you still need to think about the possible end users, domains for which there are no end users won't sell.
