Some of you may be aware of the fiasco unfolding over one my domains. Read the humorous story here

Anyway, as a result, this brings up a question I have had in the back of my mind for a while. I realize "the point" of domain appraisal companies. But seriously:
1) What's the big deal? Can't an experienced domainer do his own research?
2) If this IS such a "big deal", what companies out there do you guys recommend (when you're not knowingly getting scammed, of course ... see the link above)
3) The guy who is trying to scam me refused to accept an appraisal certificate from Sedo, for obvious reasons (he's trying to scam me, and get a commission by sending me somewhere else). BUT, his argument was that Sedo is a broker and also wants to sell domains. Thus they are not "independent". If this were a real inquiry, what would you think about this kind of argument?

Any other thoughts on domain appraisals, the theory behind it, and why it is a "big deal"?

I've never paid for an appraisal but if I did, I would go through Moniker.com. If needed, they can arrange financing against the appraised value of your domain.

I would also be wary of any buyer who tried to dictate where I should have an appraisal done. If they've already expressed willingness to spend thousands on your domain than why wouldn't they pony up their own $20 to have an appraisal done at the place of their choosing? It doesn't make sense.

A truly motivated buyer will not trip up a deal over such a minor detail.

Although a shamless plug - NameBio.com will be offering appraisal services in the near future. However there are very few places I would consider getting an Appraisal from. Even a Sedo Appraisal is pretty poor and inaccurate and doesnt include every factor that helps determine value.

I fell for these domain appraisals before.
I ordered a few from godaddy and I even upgraded some of the regular to the premium apprasials :O

But none of them has yet to come close to those provided at NP.
