The news is in. This is it and official, ICANN has in fact stripped Registerfly of the Accreditation effective IMMEDIATELY!

ICANN today issued a formal notice of termination of RegisterFly.com's Registration Accreditation Agreement (RAA).

ICANN has issued a letter to RegisterFly [PDF, 902K] indicating that it will cease operating as an ICANN-Accredited Registrar on March 31, 2007. Under the terms of the Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA), ICANN must provide 15 days written notice to RegisterFly of its intention to terminate.

Effective immediately ICANN has terminated RegisterFly's right to use the ICANN Accredited Registrar logo on its website.

Between now and 31 March RegisterFly is required to unlock and provide all necessary Authinfo codes to allow domain name transfers to occur. Any and all registrants wishing to transfer away from RegisterFly during this period should be allowed to do so efficiently and expeditiously.

"Terminating accreditation is the strongest measure ICANN is able to take against RegisterFly under its powers," Dr. Paul Twomey, President and CEO of ICANN said today.

"ICANN has been frustrated and distressed by recent management confusion inside RegisterFly," Dr. Twomey, President said. "I completely understand the greater frustration and enormous difficulty that this has created for registrants."

When the Agreement is terminated, ICANN can approve a bulk transfer of all current RegisterFly domain names to another ICANN accredited Registrar.

"Of course, RegisterFly does not have to wait till then. They can request ICANN to approve a bulk transfer immediately. I call on RegisterFly to act in the interests of registrants and seek such a transfer from us straight away," Dr. Twomey said.

ICANN intends to hold a forum to discuss the reform of the Accreditation policy and process at its Lisbon meeting in a week's time*.

A set of questions and points to inform the discussion will be made public prior to the Lisbon meeting.

* The Lisbon meeting is one of three meetings held a year by ICANN to meet with global stakeholders. It will take place from 26-30 March 2007.

I made a comment that the only logical solution for RegisterFly at this point is to partner with New.net. Then someone checked the the New.net site and low and behold, Reg Fly is listed as a partner. Does anyone know if this has been the case for awhile or if this is a recent development? I dont know, I never used Regfly, but that would just be rather funny, because basically that's their only option at this point.

 I remember you telling me about that, it was funny ot see that they do "work" together.

I have 4 domains with RF still. I cant change the WHOIS on 2 of them. These 2 say RegisterFly owns them. I emailed ICANN about these 4 domaisn and they told me they emailed RF and told me to give them 2 business days to fix. I sure hope they do fix it and soon. :(

Doe anybody know how many domains RF is holding right now? I am betting it is under 100k...

898k As of 3/12/07 According to
webhosting.info

21 REGISTERFLY.COM United States 1.097% 898,082

It would also appear they've had an increase since last month. Probably people trying to spend their account balances before they lose them.

what do most people do at this point? Wait or transfer away?

You should transfer away to the registrar of your choice, if you have the ability to do so,. rather than wait for ICANN to bulk transfer the domains to a registrar of their choice. It's not going to be pretty when that happens. Especially if your using Protectfly. You should turn off Protectfly, immediately.

Oh dear :td:

nice

I just logged in and saw that too
BUT, where the info is about the domains the text was gone but the domain number was there so I clicked it and it took me to my domains, so while I was there I checked in the whois and the auth code was there!!!
But I don't think I'll risk a transfer...D-:

The bad news: I still have about 500 domains there.

The good news: most of them are basically worthless anyway! :]

Yes, I guess I'll try to spend my balance ASAP. Anybody know some good domains to reg? :)

Incidentally, I was trying to turn off ProtectFly on some domains recently, and it wasn't working. The solution was to create a second account and push all my domains into it (changing the whois info on the way). Just in case anyone else is having this problem ...

Cheers,
Dave

They probably don't have any employees left to change it. Even if they do, it's probably only support staff and no one who can do the graphics and templates of their site. They also probably haven't received the official certified letter yet since it was sent Friday and been instructed by their attorney to do comply.

...They also haven't promptly complied with anything else ICANN has asked, so why start now?

As far as I'm concerned accreditation is only as good as its source. At this point in time a site displaying this logo means nothing other than the register paid its exorbitant fees for the right to have it there.

It could just mean this registrar is another registerfly waiting to happen and the accreditor will do nothing unless pushed into a corner. The assurance the logo gives me is no more than if they had doggy-poop.gif on the site.

I would much prefer to see my granny's "seal of approval" before doing business with a registrar than ICann's proof of payment.
Icann has said they are not a policing or judicial entity(they only collect money), so any accreditation they offer has limited credibility

If I have a good domain on there that expired that I want to keep. Is it a really bad idea to renew it right now?
