"Vint Cerf/ICANN confirm my interpretation of .biz/info/org proposed contracts—tiered/differential domain pricing would not be forbidden

I finally got the “official” word from Vint Cerf of ICANN, “on the record”, who confirmed that my interpretation is correct, that differential/tiered pricing on a domain-by-domain basis would not be forbidden under the .biz/info/org proposed contracts. This means that the registries could charge $100,000/yr for sex.biz, $25,000/yr for movies.org, etc. if they wanted to—it would not be forbidden the way the proposed contracts are currently written. This would represent a powerful pricing weapon for registries, and a fundamental shift in possible domain name pricing, that could lead them to emulate .tv-style price schedules. It doesn’t mean they will necessarily do it, but it’s not forbidden. When a contract doesn’t forbid something bad, it implicitly allows it."

Has there been any news on this whole issue recently? Seems to have gone very quiet...

Very bad for the whole industry IMO.. it will stifle alot of speculation and development both. I can see that what would eventually develop is the "little guys" being forced out of the whole domain structure. If I happen to have a premium domain already, I might eventually be forced to let it drop if someone arbitrarily decides it's worth more than I could afford to renew.

Haven't heard anything yet from ICANN. This decision on the biz/info/org contracts is far reaching. Massive implications.

I agree with you . Who will benefit when we are forced to let our premium names drop in info, biz and org?????

IMO, yet another example of why domainers need an active voice. This is purely about allowing registrars (or ICANN I guess, depending on who keeps the money) to benefit from high prices for domains.

DNOA?

Petitions don't help IMO but boycotts (or the threat of one) do... you have to hit the registrars in the pocket. Organize a web-wide one-day moratorium on buying ANY domain.. that would send a solid message not to mess with the buyers.

I think the only boycott that would work is if we all agreed to stop buying the org, info, and biz extension. Personally I wouldn't reg one anyways until this is resolved. Why buy a product that next year could be 100x the price you paid for this year? Seems incredibly bad decision to do so. I haven't gotten any domains in these extensions for weeks...and I don't plan on getting any either.

Spread the word.
