I have no programming knowledge at all and trying to read more on webprogramming just makes it even more confusing. I'm just looking around and i see people mentioning WordPress. Is that something like MS Frontpage but easier to use and you just specify what you want? I'm looking to develop something like a Bloomberg site to display news articles and data.

I registered for 5 years of hosting, and this hosting service provides Ruby on Rails. Is that also similar to Wordpress? I want to learn how to develop websites as i feel that is better than just paying somebody to do it and not knowing if you're getting ripped off.

Thanks!

Hi, without programming knowledge, I would recommend that you try investigating WordPress and look at SpringWidgets.com to help you fill in the feeds. RoR is probably a little out of your league if you have no background, whereas WordPress is really geared for both the beginner as well as the advanced.

Also, I really hope you like your hosting company alot to pre-register for 5 years of hosting.

Good luck with your ventures

wow five years is definitely a long time. seeing as you have no programming experience, you should probably start off really slow by reading up on the basics of xhtml, css, and maybe even a hint of php. those would be the basics (especially html) so feel free to dig into those. after that you should head straight to wordpress.

take it step by step as there's a lot to learn.

Wordpress is a blog software, RoR is a programming language. Wordpress could be a good start without needing to learn developing. There is also a lot of other CMS systems, Drupal a very common one.

what you want to do is EXTREMELY simple and you don't need any programming knowledge.

Just install wordpress, install one of the MANY "media" skins (or do a search for FREE PREMIUM skins like revolution2, Ikarus, Options, etc), fill that with your content and kaboom, you have what you're looking for. Depending on what you're trying to achieve and the time you have to dedicate to it, I'd recommend to use as little widgets as possible (if any), but that's your choice. Other than that, if you have hosting, your investment could be 0 (zero) and what you want to do is easy as A-B-C as long as you ever used Notepad or Word before ;)

well i want to do something like the Bloomberg site to display news and other relevant financial data. I was on the Wordpress site, and I was wondering... are those "submitted websites" all created with WordPress? Some of them look pretty good.

at this point i really have no clue of what to do. I'm going to install Wordpress and see what i can make out of it. I don't even know what to do next :(

The submitted sites are all created with wordpress. Wordpress can be easly modified through the use of themes.

I'm reading the Wordpress docs on how to install and none of it makes any sense lol. This is going to take me a long time to figure out

I haven't used it yet, but Joomla gets good reviews for its ease of use and nice design

oh thanks! i just checked it out and it looks easier to understand and use. The concept looks similar to WordPress.

I am not good technically at all and I figured out Wordpress. I signed up with a hosting agent that had automatic Wordpress installation (lots of them out there). I installed it with Simple Scripts. I did not like the Wordpress default themes so I spent hours on the net looking at themes.
I picked one, downloaded it and then went to my Cpanel and uploaded it to the site.
I probably tried about 20 themes before finding the right one for a series of sister sites I am building.
Just look on the net if you get stuck. I had no clue what I was doing and just went step by step by reading on the net.
Hope your 5 year hosting plan offers auto install of WordPress.
