The process is details at http://www.icann.org/registrars/accreditation-process.htm

There is a $2,500 fee that is payable regardless of whether the application is a success or not.

You also need to demonstrate that you have the required infrastructure and funding to manage a registrar effectively.

Take particular notice of the application form which gives you an insight to what you will need:-

http://www.icann.org/registrars/accreditation-application.htm

Do not under any circumstances take the application process lightly. Ensure you are doing it for the right reason otherwise your application will be doomed to failure.

Thanks mate :)

Surely by taking $2,500 in the case they reject the application is already bad enough.

Then look at how updated is the form:

Page Updated 11-Nov-2003
ยฉ1999, 2001 The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers All rights reserved.

Like if nothing has changed since... :bah:

but that`s for .lc ccTLD , not really what I`m looking for.

Right, but that would be the costs for that particular tld. So then you could imagine the costs if you were to setup a wide range of tlds.

Lol !

If you can search through Frank Schilling's blog, someone had directed the same question to him. He generates more than 20 million in revenues anually but his response was negative.

I guess it`s not about how much you generate but how much you can generate for the ICANN`s pockets.

You might look into being a reseller - I've heard that directi has the best prices. Enom has an extensive process with different prices for domains - you can buy rights from somebody to get the better prices.

NameCheap was a Enom reseller until recently, so it is a way to make a business. Whiz.in is a directi reseller, he may get a commission to set you up - it seems that he (TK) was offering to do that.

Don't know if it is worth the trouble.

I thought about that, but as a reseller who does control domain names in case of a dispute like for example there is 1 scammer who does a chargeback after buying a domain registered there and I know who is right and who is wrong. Do I have authority to push the domain to the right person or not?

Thanks

As the reseller you control all domains registered under your reseller account.

Not quite. The registrar could quite easily go over your head.

:hi: Charley,

You need to read Frank's blog again.

Contrary to him being negative he totally recommends everyone who has
lots of domains or even a few very valuable domains to become their own Registrar.

That's the only way to protect your portfolio.

You will then not be at the mercy of Registrar's whim.

From SevenMile.com (Frank's blog):

Feb 2007
http://www.sevenmile.com/2007/02/

"Running your own registrar today is so easy...the need for commercial registrants and those managing large portfolios for others to maintain an ownership interest in their own ICANN accredited registrar.

Tucows has a product called OpenHRS
and
Logic Boxes offers a competing product

In the future, every major company, ... will have their own ICANN accredited registrar. Its just the way things are heading IMO.
"
------
April 2007
http://www.sevenmile.com/2007/04/

"Tia Wood is going through an emotion that all domain registrants go through at some point. "How can I prove that my valuable domain names are really mine and protect myself from getting hurt (intentionally/unintentionally) by my registrar"?"

"Unfortunately the best thing you can do is buy a domain registrar of your own,"

"...most registrars โ€˜terms of servicesโ€™ (which you have to agree to) are written to protect the registrar and offer you little protection. That takes me back to running your own registrar.".

Sept 2007:
http://www.sevenmile.com/2007/09/

"People often ask me how many domain names do you need to own before it makes financial sense to own your own registrar.. If your name makes as much money as Bodog.com, the answer is 1."
----

In addition to Tucows OpenHRS and Logic Boxes offerings,
domain registrar Rebel.com has started a
"Lease A Registrar Program."

Rent a Registrar for $2000/month at MyRebel.com. No upfront costs.

I just searched the Tucows site for openHRS. The search didn't bring up any pages. So it must be a dead service.

:hi:

Yes I think there have been some changes since OpenHRS was introduced.

From Google:
http://resellers.tucows.com/about/

This was the offering:

"OpenHRS: Tucows' Open Hosted Registrar Service (OpenHRS), is a wholesale registration solution for ICANN-accredited registrars. Using the OpenSRS platform allows registrars to process and manage domain registrations, without having to build their own back-office registration infrastructures. The service incorporates connectivity to registries and ongoing support for top-level domains (TLDs) including .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .name and .us."

I think it'sll been moved under OpenSRS platform which is their Reseller program.

see here:
http://resellers.tucows.com/openhrs/

or try calling 1-800-371-6992, this was the contact # in the Press Release Tucows sent out when they announced the OpenHRS service.
