I thought I sucked at choosing domains...

but after looking around this forum, other domains forums, sedo, and on ebay at different domains for sale. A lot of people really suck at choosing catchy domains that make sense. Seriously... I can't believe some of the names people are trying to sell. At least the names I own make sense...

People register some weird crap.

God knows, I have registered my fair share (and more) of crappy domains. The thing is, most of us wake up the next morning and realize that we registered stupid domains and don't try to sell them for $XXXX.

Use other people's mistakes as a way to help your business. Follow the successful domainers - see what they are acquiring, what they bid on in auctions, and pick their brains as often as possible.

Best of luck!

Regging after midnight is a no-no as is regging after having consumed any adult beverages or being under the influence of anything else :hehe:

LOL, true! :D

But the domain business can be a tricky one in terms of finding something brandable. Even the crappy domain names get sold for a profit...you just have to find that rich, (delusional perhaps?) someone who's willing to buy it...:D

I mean, who'd ever thought names like 'flickr' would do really well...one man's trash is another man's treasure.

One person sees Flickr as a noob's knowckoff of Flicker, another person sees it as "so Web 2.0".

This sums up the domain business rather well: http://www.dnkitchen.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/strip17.jpg

I think many NP members are newcomers to the industry. There is a learning curve in this business... :)

You can't go wrong with google's keyword tool, when finding a domain. Search for phrases that gets 1,000+ in monthly traffic with the "exact" option clicked, and see if it's available in a .com or .net. If not I'd pick it up.

Google's Keyword Tool Link: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

It helps a lot with finding valuable keyword based phrases.

Yeah, I agree. I have no idea why some people register domains that don't make any sense for the purpose of reselling, or what kind of website you would use such bad domains for.

Some weird domains sometimes shows our own brand, and hopefully easier to recall.

I registered GB98.com a few years ago. It doesn't make much sense unless you know that a GB98 is a general contractors license in New Mexico. Of course it's taking years longer than I expected for contractors to see much value in websites :)

Add a subdomain freehost and then you get

I regged CabanaMama.com while slurping a substantial rum and Coke.

I keep the domain as a reminder of what not to do while domaining.

Some people just have to register something it seems to get their fix. Others, english isn't their first language and that can cause many a problem. And of course there are some that just aren't explainable.

Making sense is a great way to start. When you have to explain a name its a loser most of the time

I have put some not so wise domains on a list, but I always think about them before I purchase.

It does not matter if your names make sense as much as how educated the buyer is. Most domainers have no clue about domain name valuations.

Let me give you an example. I am say selling Omahatours for $250. No one will bite. But the same folks viewing this offer will offer their crappy names for XXXX.

How is anyone getting rich in this business?

And then they congratulate for L-L-L name being sold for $5000 and celebrate other domainers success while sitting on some useless bunch of names looking for domaining success.

Unbelievable.

Here is a pointer for any newb. Buy domains with a clear use. A domain name that explains what a site might offer is valuable to end users.

Product or Service related domains are the easiest to sell.

Not only that but a domain with a clear use gets targeted traffic. Targeted traffic is much easier to monetize.

Resist the urge to buy brandables that don't make sense.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've regged some pretty useless names after midnight, after drinking or a combination of both. It might seem like a brilliant move during that moment of "clarity", but the best thing to do is to write down the name and think it over in the morning after doing some keyword searches, etc.
