I started domaining because i caught with an old friend who told me he was working at a registrar where people reg website address's ???

He explained that some people reg a 'typo' and make money off it , he also said that after the 'tech bust' of 2000 that the internet would make a comeback .... big time and that kids were growing up with it and it was here to stay

I didn't think much of the registering of 'typos' idea and i really got the bug after discovering sedo and seeing that there was a market for this type of investment , and then discovering namepros was the icing on the cake

Why did you start domaining ???

I started domaining since July 2006, right after a friend asking me to help him register a .co.uk domain since he has no credit card and paypal. I have to search via google that where I can register the cheapest .co.uk domain by using paypal.

I found Namepros then ... :)

Originally it started with my interest as a web designer. There was a domain I wanted that was already owned by someone else. I tried contacting the person but the owner didn't communicate well, especially since English was not his first language. I spent some time researching domains. This led me to an expedition and a strong interest in names, especially seeing the prices that some go for.

I started domaining soon after I register my first domain. I am finding discount code and I found Namepros. I am addicted to it after I made a few bucks with it. Now i am losing money because I am too hurry into domaining. I should have reading the forums for more than 3 months before start registering.

I started domaining because I love the rush of the stock market and with domaining the overhead is far cheaper ;)

About a year ago I registered my first domain to make a website I've been wanting to make, I got some hosting at the same time.

After that, I registered a couple of domains as jokes and decided to make sites with them. A while later, I registered a few more for more websites for my wife and other people that wanted sites. After that, I registered a ton of .info domains that I wanted to develop. Around that time, I found NamePros and learned that people make money selling domains. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of money on domains that I found out were no good.

I'm still learning a lot and want to have a good idea of what's good and what isn't before I dive in.

I started domaining because of the potential to make millions of dollars. Why else would you start domaining? lol.

Ever since I started tinkering with a 5mb hosting account from Pac Bell over dial-up, I've been intrigued by the internet. Seeing as domains are the real estate of the internet, it was kind of a natural fit :)

I remember in 1993 Income Opportunities mag had a front page layout on the dot com revolution. However I left if behind when I and my Ex wife were getting ready for wedding plans. :p

If i stayed with it I would have been up there with the other multi millionaires :bah:

it seems we are always learning in this 'game'

i will let over a 100 domains (mistakes) drop this year , i have faith in the remaining and i like that i have the option to develop as an option ?

I started domaining around Feb 2007 when I was looking at how to make money off the net. Came across the forum DP & came across the Domain section, found out Namepros, started off regging with the .mobi thinking it's the "next big thing", stopped wasting my money with that extentions & found more sensible extentions to put my money into.

i started domaining because of a very close friend of mine who's a regular on this forum. i'd hear stories of the domains he bought and sold; i never knew the cult marketplace of domains was so large. the stories of purchases and sales didnt get me into domaining, it was the idea of making income off domains through parking or development.

i'm never going to scan droplists for 8 hours to pick up some domains and shop them to end users, but i am going to continue to pickup typos and other keyword domains that get good passive targetted traffic and work to monetize them.

I started domaining to develop sites but found that I like finding names better. 2 plus years later I have finally got around to developing a couple of sites.

I started domaining about a year ago because I searched for various ways to increase my website's traffic. It turned out domaining is teh shit :yell:-, I found quite a few ways for automating various things using domains (like drop catchers; auto domain research and then auto domain reg)... and since I love automation & programming it looks like I will be doing this for the next few years, if not more. :hearts:

I forget the name of the registrar (it was bought out by Network Solutions or it was a Network Solutions reseller), saw their ads online for domain names and could register for $35 per year..in 1998

It was a gradual process, bought a name first, then a couple of more names and then somemore...and more and more..

The concept of being able to reach essentially anyone in the world by starting a webpage was the reason..

i always thought domaining is a good investment because if you cant sell a name you have faith in, you have the option of developing ..... cool

In May 2007, I was writing a book (novel), and my characters and fictional places needed websites. I couldn't just slap in any old URLs, so I registered some reg-fee domains through Yahoo! (A HUGE mistake, which I had to fix six months later via transfering).

My main character Jane Godwin has her own website as does her crazy student (Dracula911.com, found on GoDaddy TDNAM, and fits this character perfectly. As a domain name, terrible).

I keep changing the title of the book, so I have three or four book title domains.

I am the proud owner of the fictional Quill City, Quill College, and Quill Distillery (which founded Quill College). Not knowing any better, I purposely sought domains that returned very few results because I was afraid of falling into some vague TM trouble--hence, all the "Q" domains.

D-:

The book itself is on temporary hiatus, but, somehow, I fell into domaining.

I like the rush of discovering a great name, but it's not a good business plan to treat domaining like an Atlantic City slot machine or craps table; I have to keep this part of my personality in check.

I missed the dot com rush, but I have registered some great .me and .tel domains; I really did my research for these TLDs and only regged premiums. I have other premium and some speculative .tels on GA backorder; if they go to others, so be it.

I also bought some aftermarket domains, spending a scary amount on Poets [dot]net. I had a specific literary purpose for this domain.

Part of this biz is knowing when to buy in, hold, and fold (a gambling term?).

Like some of you, I wish I would have done more research back in 2007 because some of my early domains are real head scratchers.

I am convinced that domaining draws people with gambling tendencies, but since I started domaining, I no longer find traditional gambling all that attractive.

This is a great thread, BTW, and should be must-reading for domain newbies!
