You have to do some detective work - first COPY and PASTE the name and plug it into a punycode converter - this is the one I use

For example here is micrοsoft.com - that looks real right? OK so copy and paste from the box below and put it into the TEXT box on punycoder and "Convert to Punycode" and see what you get
If it's IDN, it will show you the punycode which always starts with "xn--" The example I just gave is super sneaky because I replaced the first "O" in microsoft with the
Greek Letter Omicron which appears identical to the Latin Letter O
There are other examples where it's a bit more obvious it's using a foreign character like
ï is the letter I with umlaut so if you saw mïcrosoft.com it would be more obvious but still tricky and it can also depend on the font, some visually look more sneaky than others.
You can also search a whois that displays punycode(not all do) using the COPY and PASTE method - gwhois.org is a good one
