Of course, I want to keep ownership of my domain.

I have a friend who is pretty good at WordPress (100x better than me) but I need to get my domain into his HostMonster acount in order for him to develop it.

The only way he knows how to add his domains to his hostmonster acount is by owning the domain.

How do I do get my domain into his HostMonster account so he can develop it for me??
Change something on my Whois?
Just forward my NameServers to somewhere...

Sorry, but I really have no clue and need your help

Sorry, this is such a noob question.
Hope my question makes sense.

Thx,
Vito

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I build websites too and I have never heard of such a scenario. Normally you would buy your own hosting and then inside cpanel you would create an ftp account and give access to that account.

If he is going to provide the hosting all you would need to do is to set up the nameservers. Whois changes or moving the domain are never needed. Friendships are not permanent. Don't do it even if you trust this person. This is not how these things are done.

You can buy a hosting at namecheap for under $40 a year. If he will host it then he should give you the nameservers. If he doesn't know how to do it, he is not the right person for this job.

Yeah,
Thats the problem.

I really dont know how to play with cpanel and the ftp stuff.

I guess I will have to learn how to do that and get my own hosting.

As always Erdy...Thanks. :)

I don't recommend putting your domain in any ones account other than yours.
is hostmonster your host and registrar in this case?
if so call hostmonster they should be able to walk you through it.
also if you buddy really needs access to the domain you can ask hostmonster if they offer account executives, you can set it up where he can do anything with the domain other than transfer it etc and revoke his privileges at anytime
Good Luck

p.s. long time no talk dot
this is my 1st post in a long time.:O D-::notme::lala:

Go to your domain registrar, and change your nameservers to...

ns1.hostmonster.com
ns2.hostmonster.com

Tell him to log into his Control Panel and add your domain. (https://www.hostmonster.com/cgi/help/250)
Within usually 24-72 hours, everything should be working fine.

Hitch's suggestion will work if you want to keep the site in his hosting account.

So you have two options:
1. Host the site in his account by changing only nameservers
2. Buy your own hosting

I would go with the second option. This is an opportunity to learn how these things work. It will be good if you learn it. Also it is better to keep your site in your account.

If you decide to go with the second option you need to learn two things:

How to Create FTP Accounts in CPanel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37eQSgG3n1Y
You will do this exactly like he does in the video. Leave the directory as public_html like in the video. This is your main directory. At the end in the video it says copy these details and you should copy and emails them to your designer.

Cpanel works the same everywhere provided that you have cpanel as your control panel. It is the most common control panel for hosting accounts. The namecheap $35 basic hosting comes with cpanel. It is a good deal and works fine.

Installing WordPress on your Webhost
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nse3Gdtvs4
In this video the guy creates a database in cpanel and enters the database name, database user and database password in the config file that he downloaded from wordpress.com. Then he uploads these files to his hosting account. Instead you would create the database and hand over those 3 details to your designer.

For the record: In the second video, during the wordpress installation the person downloads the files from wordpress.com to his computer and unzips them before editing and uploading. Instead I would download and upload the zip file to my hosting account. Then from cpanel 'file manager' you can go in and unzip the file on the server and then delete the zip file. Then download the config file, edit it and upload it. This will work faster than sending via ftp hundreds of small files. Also some hosting accounts have something called fantastico (which you can see on the main page of cpanel if there is one) and it lets you install common software, including wordpress with one click without downloading and uploading it.

It is easy really, there is nothing too complicated. Just watch the videos. You can find tons more videos if needed.
