someone who was apparently bidding on this name as I was---here is the e-mail:

Mr. York,

Due to my forgetfulness, you beat me by 50 cents for the domain name backdoctor.org.

Was hoping you might have bought the domain as an investment. If so, how much is my mistake going to cost me?

Thanks,

Mike

His email address even has backdoctor reference in it.
I think I paid 13.00 for it---but I think it is a pretty good name.
What should I ask for it?
I need help please---this could be my first sale :)
After I received the email I went and regged the .info version as that was the only extension not taken :)
Thanks everyone

Do your research on the guy the best you can. You may want to send an email that you are willing to sell for $500 plus escrow fees. If he wants it, he will pay that amount. If you had the .com version, I would be a little bit more greedy, but you don't, so I probably wouldn't ask for more than $500.

I think the Fonz, is right on with this one. ;)

Google everything about the guy you can, his email address, his name + email address, anything you can find.

It is a .org, however, so I think around $500 would be a good price too. You might go a little higher as a starting point .. Maybe $750... if you can find out the guy can afford it and then let him work his way down to $500.

Good Luck

When you search the email address do you use Goggle local or what.
Just putting in the email address into regular google I get nothing---when I put it into local it shows an address that is in the same county as I am--thats weird
Can someone help?
Thanks

If you have his first and last name, you can search google for that. Based on the domain name, he may be a doctor or chiropratic. If he is, he may be looking to use the domain for his business. If that is the case, he could afford to shell out a few hundred bucks for the domain. Knowing who your prospective buyer is can help tons when determining how much to ask for.

All I have is his first name
And like I said when I google the email address it comes up nothing except when I do google local and than it gives me an address.
Anyone have any suggestions on finding out more about the person.
Or do I just send the email and take my chances :)

I'd email him one more time asking for his last name. With that info, if you dig deep enough, you can find all sorts of info about him.

There are hundreds of ways to find out more about this guy. Emailing him and asking for his last name isn't on my list :)

You can probably confirm his location by checking the email headers. If those match up with your Google results it's probably accurate. But you already have all the information you need.

The guy lost an auction by 50 cents on a $13 name. He didn't bother with the .info. He's probably not going to spend a lot of money on this. If he were he would have done so already. Unless you find out that he's chairman of some huge Chiropractor organisation what is planning a $1M marketing campaign to rebrand as โ€œBack Doctorโ€ he's probably going to pay a few hundred bucks top.

Once you're satisfied he isn't going to pay $100k I'd write back offering condolences for his loss, but explain that you have plans for the name and consider that you picked it up for a steal. Let him know that anything is for sale at the right price but that a quick profit of 50 cents, or even 50 bucks isn't going to get you excited. If that's not out of his budgets ballpark you'll hear back from him, probably with an offer.

Thanks Everyone for some great Tips.
So should I send an email back with my offer or should I send an email back trying to get an offer from him.
Thanks again

if he 'lost' an auction for a name that finally maxed out at $13 with his top bid @ $12.50, he's hardly going to pay you $500 for it now is he? (ref: not the department of rocket science)
IMHO, good name, you did the right thing regging the .info
...however if you sell the name(s), it will be to someone else.

I sent him an email letting him know that anything is for sale at the rite price and if he had an offer in mind that I would listen---something like that.
I will let you know what happens.
Thanks again everyone

This has happened to me on several occasions. The solution is to respond with a very short concise message: "Very sorry to learn of your misfortune, but I need this domain as I have development plans. Thank you, (your name)."

Anybody who seriously wants this name will not stop there. They will continue to contact you, whether it's now or next month. After sending that message, just wait for them to contact you again. And again. If they don't try several times, the name isn't worth much to them and they wouldn't pay much for it. If they DO continue to contact you over time, you know they will jump through hoops to get it back. Good luck!
