I hate snapnames & pool. They make it impossible for anyone to get a good domain. Only the rich can afford the good domains now. For example, the a1.com auction that went for $260,000. Imagine if someone like you or me would have come upon that domain for reg fee after it expired... we would be quite rich. We could finally afford life's riches like a hot new ferrari or a nice house. With snapnames and pool around, this will never happen. I personally think domain buying would be much more exciting if snapnames and pool never existed.

It's simple supply and demand. You would never be the only person to know that A1.com was dropping and "come upon it for reg fee" - there are people who've been watching it, and every other domain, for 6 months before the drop. Even in the late 90's, the competition for expiring domains was strong.

The only "fair" way to do it is by lottery - totally random - but as soon as you offer a chance of winning an immensely valuable domain, the number of players will be enormous, and your chances of getting the name would be negligible. Mum and Dad's who've never even been on the internet would suddenly get in on the action if they had a chance to win $250,000.

Then the real question arises as to whether it's fair to reward dumb luck instead of the entrepreneurs who've worked hard to be able to afford to pay such high prices in the first place.

If you read the previous jarbled post, excuse me- am rewriting. A little scatterred w/ my thoughts about the Big picture, ATM and a bit rusty at at keyboard. Having a "Know what I want to say, but can't spit it out right, moment." Excellent topic and discussion, however, and I 'd like to hear more.
