I Hate Email Spam!

I really, really hate e-mail spam. I'm sure everyone here feels the same way. About a year and a half ago when I acquired my last name .COM, I quickly and excitedly set up my first name @ my last name .com. It was the perfect e-mail address, I thought.

Today it receives no less than 25 spam emails per day. Normally, this wouldn't bother me much since my spam filter in Thunderbird at home is very thorough. However, I check my e-mail address (POP3 mail forwarded to my DNOA gmail account) constantly at work, and oftentimes on my iPod touch when I'm not around a computer.

Since I don't think it's possible to stop the spam at its source, what are some strategies everyone is using to stop spam? Something I've been trying (a little too late) has been setting up forwarding accounts that all forward to my main address. This way, I know where the spam mail, if any, is coming from. For example, I have an account at Pool registered to pool @ my last name .com. All mail that is sent to pool @ my last name .com forwards to my main email account, and email programs will tell you that the mail was sent to pool @ my last name .com. I do the same thing with my domain ownership email address (I've found that's where A LOT of spam is originating).

I'm thinking that if I were to make a catch-all address, and when I register for a site, put that site's name @ my domain .com, I'll be able to more prevent certain spam emails. It might not be completely bulletproof, but I think it should be pretty effective for starting over (I'm going to consider my current "ideal" email address hopeless).

What other methods are there? :) I'm really interested in hearing what steps everyone else takes.

Steve B-)

Isn't spam strange? I get 3 or 4 spam emails a day, if that, and I make my email address public on every site I visit.

You just wonder how they got ur emails. You've tried hard to make ur email private.
The best way to prevent more spamming is to not open a spam.

That's what I wonder, too. For a while, I had my regular email address as my Whois contact, which leads me to believe that's where a large portion of it comes from. I'm really picky about where I give my email address, and it looks like I'll have to increase my carefulness even more.

The worst part is having to retrace my steps and go around to every site I've registered with to update my e-mail address... :td:

Spam is no fun. I've got nearly 2,000 messages in my spam folder that I have to go through again. I can sift through and delete all and within a few days it's over 500 again.

The part that sucks is that once in awhile there are legit emails in the spam folder so mass deleting all without looking could delete an important one... :|

Stupid spammers. :yell:

Should just forward your spam box to someone you don't like :red:

Yeah, that's what I really hate. In the past week, I've missed a crucial e-mail from a Sedo transfer agent and an offer for a domain I had for sale. :(

Thanks, I'll try that. :)

I've realized that making email addresses public is often a primary cause for personal domain email spam.

I generally use Gmail as my primary email and the spam filter there is the best I've seen.. seems to catch about 98% of the spam if not better.

I also like to use throwaway emails if I think I'll get spammed and I have one separate email that I use for contest entries and the like.

Totally agree, Gmail is the best free email account to filter out the spam. In fact, I don't think any spam email has ever hit my Inbox there!

I do that now; that's not the problem. Gmail's filter is very thorough, but I check my mail on at least three devices. I wish I could stop it at the source somehow. :td:

Anyway you can redirect mail from certain addresses back to them? or reject it if it has certain words in it. :]
