Hi Community,

First I am not in the domain business I was just lucky to grab an expired domain (once).
This domain is being used by a decent size company worldwide but they just forgot to re-register.

Now my question is how to sell it for a good price? Just put it up for sale or auction?

I don't want to name the domain yet.

Thanks for any help!

Sell it to who? The company that dropped it? Don't assume they forgot to renew it. They would have noticed that their website stopped resolving well before the deadline to renew it. They might have dropped it on purpose.

Easiest solution would be to list it with BIN option on Sedo.com. Auction is worthless unless you have a minimum of two interested buyers. If you're not receiving offers via email than assume you don't have any interested buyers.

Thanks for your input.

Let's say I have some insider info on this one. And yes they forgot to renew.
They still have other domains fully operational.

A professional buyer can negotiate the price with the company better than me.

If you feel like someone who knows the domain industry can sell the domain name for more than what you could, I suggest hiring a broker and tell them any and all information you may know about the company.

Something to always check (ease of mind) Trademarkia is a handy tool

Thanks. Just ran some combinations on Trademarkia. Looks all good. Not registered.

I would focus on the price and what you will say when/if you have contact with them.

Also, it sounds like the domain wasn't used for much by the company. Otherwise, they would have noticed if things suddenly didn't work..like email and such.

Reach out to them and suggest a price. If it was an accident, then they will want to work something out swiftly.

wait, until someone contacts you

As long as there are no possible trademark issues, I would go with what @biggie has said. Wait for them to contact you. It will also clear if the domain is of any worth for them or not.

Yep, I agree....I would also wait it out.

Maybe stick the domain on Flippa classifieds and use flippa's landing/offer page template or create your own landing page/ offer page and then just wait for the company to contact you.

Nice idea mate. By setting up a landing page, you will openly tell the company (if they are looking to get the domain back) that it is for sale and that they can acquire it.

Secondly, I wouldn't advice you to hire a domain broker once the negotiations start, considering the domain is not a six figure domain; or is it???

Best.

Actually ...just thought of something now..

U said u have some insider info that they forgot to renew the domain.

Great, use this inside contact to ur advantage even more. (Maybe even offer them a 10% commission on the sale)

Once you setup ur landing page / Offer page - Tell your inside contact to mention to the decision maker "Hey Mr X, I was just browsing the net and I noticed one of our domains are for sale, why is that?" Then off course Mr X will head over to the domain in question and see it's for sale.... NOW, if he is in charge of the website and online marketing he is gonna want to grab that domain quickly before one of the other senior managers or even worse one of the competitors see that the domain is for sale. :) - Then low and behold and offer will magically appear in your inbox.

Kinda sneaky way of getting as the sale...but I'm not here to judge, just pointing out the options to you :)

That really helped to find a course of action for me!

This sort of activity is what gives domainers a bad name :(

Given you "are not in the domain business" yet you "have insider info", and forgive my presumptuousness, but did you know this was dropping from your inside info? Or did it drop and you lucky happened upon it and later found out they forgot to re-reg?
If the latter then that's their bad luck I suppose. If the former then it's not a good thing to do really.

It all sounds shady to me.

One big mistake domainers make is to assume because they checked the trademark databases and did not find anything they are OK.

This is not true.

A company does not have to register a trademark to have protection.

Simply by using the mark on a regular basis as part of their everyday business they have an implied trademark, especially if they have been doing so for a long time and even more if it predates your ownership of the domain.

It will be hard convincing anyone that this is not a bad faith transaction.

Of course I am assuming this name is related to their brand and not a truly generic term in which case you could be alright.

If you try to sell a name "brand" back to a big company with deep pockets and lots of attorneys you are looking for trouble.

If they somehow lost the name accidentally do you think they are going to stand for you trying to make a buck selling it back to them.

I don't think so.
