Surged up to 40k a couple of days ago now the count has sunk down to 8k from yesterday.

I guess because everyone rushed to get their 25 free .infos, and since you can only take advantage of that offer once, the numbers are starting to go back to normal, or at least down from the giant surge of people getting not just one, but twenty-five free domains.

Perhaps the really good domain ideas are really taken, and the only ones remaining are the reg fee ones, and not worth the bother.
