Hypens in domains and are they better?

Hi

Just wanted to know if for example i was buying a domain name based on two keywords E.g "blue" and "car".

I could buy the domain in two ways

1) bluecar.com

2) blue-car.com

My question is by having the hypen in there does this mean that if a user was to search with the words the opposite way round i.e "car blue" my site would appear if i had the hypen and maybe would not appear if i didn't it? I am seeing some results appearing to show this - Is this correct?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

First off -- Welcome to Namepros! :)

Search engines currently don't look at a hyphen between 2 words such as "blue car", so from an SEO point of view the hyphen is okay, maybe even a good thing if it helps the search engine determine what the 2 words are.

When it comes to visitors however, the hyphenated version will both receive far less type-in traffic than the non-hyphenated version and secondly, will bleed a lot of traffic to the non-hyphenated version should you develop the hyphenated version.

Pure domaining with hyphenated domains is difficult until you get a good grasp on what sells and what doesn't. When it comes to development, some people swear by them, others despise them. Guess it really depends on what you want to do with it.

Welcome to NamePros...

Anyways... To my knowledge hypens in domains are great if your trying to drive traffic from search engines, but not so great if you are trying to drive traffic from type ins.. This is because the - may confuse people on the domain.

Yeah, exactly. The best domains are the ones that have full real dictionary words with no other characters, such as hyphens or numbers. As for search engine optimization, it really has nothing to do with that.

as long as the domain is not parked and has unique content then it should do well in seo with a hyphen domain.

Ok the above example of definitely shows better than anyone could explain that for SEO/SERP reasons have hypens will not hurt you. If you want people to remember your site and type it in that could be a problem.

hyphens might not hurt you that much in terms of seo, but i'd go with "bluecar" instead of "blue-car" as both have effectively the same seo benefit, but the former is stronger as a stand-alone domain.

imo neither one is better for search engines since google for example is smart enough to figure things out with or without the hyphen
