Perhaps I should have asked this BEFORE I bought a bunch of them but does a dash (or hyphen) seriously hurt an otherwise good domain?

For example: Real-Mortgages.com or Loan-Spot.net or say Coffee-Machines.com

I like them but how does the hyphen affect searches, SEO, traffic, resale... whatever?

Hyphenated domains bring the value down drastically. I understand the reason for hyphens but if the word makes sense, it will sell but 20-30 % lower[indicative figures] than non hyphenated ones.

Also another issue is people wouldnt remember a hyphenated domain well.

I keep these attributes , when I think of hyphenated domains. :)

If the hyphenated domain is in relationship with a product to be launched, eg.

windows-vista.com

and you regged it before vista started, you may sell it for a very high price...

Two words joined by a hyphen (related) can also sell for alot.

It can help if you are developing these, hyphenated domains are more search engine friendly as per my observation.

I disagree on this statement.

Can you write down few instances , so we could identify it? :)

I would agree with this but they are definetly not worthless and I beleive some people may actually prefer them.

The figures speak for themselves :)

http://www.namepros.com/domain-name...rted-hyphen-domain-sale.html?highlight=hyphen I dare you to read it all

I think they are also good for search engines.

ps - I am not trying to beat the hyphen-domain drum :hehe: Just trying to share useful facts and figures.

I have'nt sold one yet :'(

Hyphen does bring down the resale value of the domain by some percentage. Also the hyphenated domains are not ideally suited for word of mouth publicity and to get type-in traffic to the site.

Hyphenated domains are also good when their un-hyphenated counterparts are gone.

A hyphen linking two related dictionary words can also jack up the resale value.
