.htaccess and .htpasswd

Hi, I hope this is the right place.
I am 100 new to all this so please excuse the very vague understanding I may have.
I have hosted my site on heartinternet.co.uk.
i liked the look of the option for passwording a directory.
The online software asked me for the directory and a user name and password.
it put the .htaccess and htpasswd files into this directory.
The 1st few times it gave me a pop up box asking for the password and username but it would not accept it.
i have deleted and reset paswords and created new folders and created new passwords and nothing works.
The latest is this -
if i type in w*w.mysite.com/newmember I get a "not authorised page".
If i type in same ..../newmembers/newmembers.html I can get that page.
I dont understand why the password didnt work the first time and now?
I dont understand why the folder is giving me this message now without a pop up box asking for my details
and
I am lost as to why the file inside the so-called locked directory is still available.
this is driving me crazy
Any help would be appreciated. (as long as you understand the level i am at)

when you set automatically these 2 files .htpasswd and .htaccess pls. kindly wait 15 minutes before it refreshed and make your password active, if it fails, start again by removing/deleting those 2 files and set it up again. HTH
