Hi there everyone

Is there a way of finding out how many free domain names there are in a certain category without manually checking them all via a registrar yourself?

Say for example if I wanted to see how many free dictionary .coms were out there still or boys first names?

thanks :)

I am not aware of any other method than checking the whois databases. There are a couple utilities that let you check ~50k domains in a single batch, but they simply check domains one by one using multiple threads.

cheers for the reply - looks like its a manual type of affair then. just can't work out how to make it possible timewise though with dictionary words cos it will take a long time to go through every word in the dictonary and typing in by hand to check. even with the bulk upload you would need to go through the dictionary one by one to find the names to put in there.

was kinda hoping there was a database online somewhere that just listed the free ones but i guess thats too easy ha ha

Indeed it would be too easy to have a convenient database shared openly and transparently. Unfortunately, this almost never happen on the web

Now, it's not that complicated to create your own database if you know a little about programminng. There are plenty of databases that you can scrap, utilities, APIs and other tools to make your life easier.

You said it yourself
but i guess thats too easy ha ha

If it were so, I am sure you and I would have no business joining the domainer squad now in 2015 ;)
