Hello All,

a partner and I are looking to register quite a few .com.au names. Is there a way to register them if you are not an australian person / company?

Best Regards
Nico

Basic Information for Australian Domain Regstration

.com.au & .net.au
Must have either an Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Company Number (ACN).
No exceptions
ABN's are issued to all Sole Traders or Business registered with the Australian Tax Office (ATO)

Any foreign Residents wishing to register .com.au & .net.au must have legal business reasons and be a holder of a ACN

No domain name speculation is allowed. Only legal transfer is as the result of a legal business ownership sale.

.org.au The above rules apply except for Registered Non-profit organisations
holding a ABN proving that status.

Now ,BareFootTech's own observations
1/ Several people here at namepros have expressed a desire or ambition to buy .com.au for speculation. Don't even consider it ,all registrations are manually checked and subject to periodic review . YOU will not only lose the name ,no refunds, but you will be subject to legal action by the government agency auDA. And believe me they do check , I have had 3 random Audits this year alone for my WebName4.com.au Reseller Site.

2/ Do not put pressure on Registrars or resellers like myself to buy them for you. I will not risk my business and de-registration as an authorised reseller for doing this. Plus I am also liable for fines and/or jail time for attempting to defraud the government.

3/ Even if you manage to register the name and don't immediately get caught.
.com.au and .net.au are not really worth much anyway.

4/ In case anyone wonders , I own
BareFootTech.net.au
BareFootTech.com.au
LowCostHosting.com.au
WebName4.com.au
Vista.id.au
Dunderhill.id.au

I am also trustee for
2cbd.org.au
(local FM Group)

I would be very careful about suggesting someone to use a planetdomains.com
Reseller like Swiftwebs.com is (as I am as well) ,as Graheme ,their reseller manager is a member here and a friend of mine.

ForumBay , SwiftWebs.com is Subject to all the auDA rules as all auDA approved resellers are.

P.s. My prices for .com.au & .net.au are cheaper than their quoted $49.76Aud incl. GST Prices

Things used to be tighter in Australia whereby you could only register a domain name if it was similar to your registered business name.

While things are somewhat looser it's not to say it's made it any easier for people outside of Australia to register a domain name.

If you have an ABN or ACN and you have a legitimate product or service or brand you can register a domain name that is the same or similar to it.

While I don't think it takes much to do that you still need that registered business in Australia.

That will be your greatest hurdle.

What do you want the domains for?

That was changed at the beginning of this year
You can ,if you qualify for .com.au, now register any name at all. No real restrictions apply to the name.

I already own a .com.au. Does that mean I qualify?

yes ,if you have a ABN , the old requirement to register only your trading or products name is long gone
