howdy,

i use a 5char .com for my small private site. i really don't want to lose it due to incorrect whois details.

private whois is for most of tlds of my domain names available, but not for .de, .eu, .mobi for example.
i trust my registrar (namecheap), but i assume it would be safer to have actually MY details in the whois.

what would be the best solution to keep my contact details private?

i saw that most companies don't have a name in their details, but instead use 'Domain Admin' as name. i'm guessing i can't do that safely, being not a company, right?
i currently use my previous home address at my grand parents, a non-listed number from that town, which redirects to my new home-number. for email i use '[email protected]'.

cheers

I'm not sure what you're asking as you kind of asked and
answered it yourself.

If you don't want to loose the domain -
put the right stuff on it - or use privacy!

if you don't want to put the right stuff on it or use privacy - put fake stuff - but
make sure it's verifiable - or you will loose it ;)

If you live in an apartment use the address but not the apartment #.
If you live in a house go get a post office box and a cell phone number and use it on all your domains.
You could also use Name.com, NameCheap.com and Fabulous.com which offer free whois in the domain registration price.

The only verifiable info you will need is your email and phone contact. If you have taken care of the email, get a voicemail. It is cheap and you can always pick up messages. And yes, keep your home address discreet.

i just post my street name not my house number though i dont think there is much privacy in that. my telephone number is outdated though, too lazy to change it all over the place.

how about po box? i think they work better.

If I don't have privacy I just use the street number and name and prepaid cellphone. I live in a APT so I don't give out the #

I just used my college address, i hope that doesnt cause any problems. I hadn't realized ther was a thing such as whois and was quite surprised it displayed that sort of information publicly.

You are putting yourself at risk if any info in your whois doesn't lead directly to you (the exception being whois privacy of course).

If you have decent domains or rely on the income from developed domains, then you definitely want 100% accurate whois info.

I highly doubt you will run into any problem because you use Domain Admin, Domain Manager etc. instead of your real name. Many people and businesses including large organizations use titles rather than names in the WHOIS database.

I would recommend that you simply use a whois privacy service, that way you should be pretty sure not to break any rules and you can keep your privacy.

In general the most important to keep up to date is your email address and phone number.

A PO Box is only 40 or 50 bucks for a year. I register my domains to a PO Box.

"Domain Admin" for the contact name. [email protected] for an email address.

For the phone number, I have a pre-paid cell phone. Costs me 10 bucks every 3 months to keep the number.

A PO Box is a good way to go. You can also look into getting skype or some similar service for an incoming phone #. I know there was one service that offered incoming only for next to nothing yearly...

switch to t-mobile and if you buy a $100 prepaid card once it puts you into gold status which means that instantly after that initial $100 card purchase your minutes last for a year and any card you buy after that $100 card even if it's only a $10 card will also last for a year and as long as you buy a new card once a year it will renew any unused minutes for a year as well.

To change our whois information do we have to do it through the registrar? will it update automatically?

yes you have to change it where you bought the domain, will it change after you change it yes, will it change every time you move without manually changing it no, although that would be nice I think that would involve some form of gps chip implanted in your brain. :hehe:

If you are not going to use Whois Privacy (like WhoisGuard) then you need to strike a balance between privacy and being contactable. Some registrars (who I won't name here) act on complaints by the public with regard to invalid whois data.

Consequently if you aren't contactable, or it just looks fake, or if it contradicts some info already out there (about you), then a registrar might decide to pull the pin on your domain first, and ask questions later.

I know one. I got charged an admin fee for invalid phone number. The TOS indicate that if they contact you and you don't respond in 5 days they can DELETE the domain.

I had my real email so saw the note of complaint and cleared it up. I have all my real information because my name address and everything else is all public information anyway in searchable government records.

If you use privacy you need to find out how they handle complaints because many of the rules are ICANNs and not the registrar etc.

Also - AFAIK technically you are NOT the listed owner of the domain which MAY cause legal issues... especially if THEY don't respond appropriately to ICANN and Third Party complaints etc.

it IS a tmobile prepaid phone. I don't use it at all so I'm not sure I want to put 100 bucks on it.

You need to buy private registration at your domain registry. Its a small charge for a single domain. Our information is left open so that clients can see we have nothing to hide. I can understand where some people would want to hide their information. You can also purchase certified domain and other options for domains. Your registry should make this information available at check out if they are any good.

UPS store also offer post office which make the address looks real. but once they google the map they can see that it a ups store. So ya it up to you.
you can get apply for DBA "doing business as" in your local city and use that which would seem to be safe but don't quote me on that one. check your local law.

I hope I helped a bit here.

You can omit some details like street number or something.
